Doha, Qatar – Hamad Medical Corporation’s (HMC) Heart Hospital (HH) has achieved a global milestone, becoming the first specialist cardiology hospital in the world to earn Planetree Certification for Excellence in Person-Centered Care. The hospital received the silver-level certification, recognizing its commitment to patient-focused healthcare. This achievement underscores Qatar’s growing prominence as a leader in innovative and compassionate medical services.

The announcement, made by HMC officials, highlights the hospital’s dedication to providing comprehensive cardiac care, encompassing interventional cardiology, heart failure management, and emergency services. HH is the sole tertiary cardiac center in Qatar offering a full spectrum of cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, including the nation’s first heart transplant in 2025. This certification builds upon previous Planetree recognitions for other HMC facilities.

The Planetree Certification signifies more than just meeting standards; it represents a fundamental shift in how healthcare is delivered. It emphasizes collaboration between patients, families, and healthcare professionals to create a healing environment that respects individual needs and preferences. This approach is increasingly recognized as vital for improving patient outcomes and overall satisfaction.

According to Planetree, a non-profit organization dedicated to person-centered care, the certification process is rigorous. It involves a thorough assessment of an organization’s policies, practices, and culture. Representatives from Planetree conduct on-site visits, engaging in discussions with patients, families, and staff to validate the implementation of person-centered principles.

Key Areas of Assessment

The evaluation criteria for the Planetree Certification cover several crucial aspects of the patient experience. These include the quality of communication between patients and providers, easy access to health information, active family involvement in care planning, and a supportive physical environment. The assessment also examines how the hospital supports its workforce and fosters a culture of continuous improvement.

HH’s success in achieving this certification is attributed to its long-standing commitment to patient empowerment. The hospital actively seeks feedback from patients and families to identify areas for enhancement and ensure that their voices are heard. This dedication to incorporating patient perspectives into care delivery is a cornerstone of the Planetree model. Furthermore, the hospital prioritizes staff well-being, recognizing that a supported and engaged workforce is essential for providing exceptional patient care.

This achievement aligns with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which prioritizes the development of a world-class healthcare system. The focus on person-centered care reflects a broader trend in global healthcare, moving away from a purely disease-focused approach to one that considers the holistic needs of the individual. The implementation of advanced cardiovascular treatments alongside this patient-centric philosophy positions HH as a leading institution in the region.

The certification process also included a detailed review of HH’s performance data related to patient experience and quality of care. Planetree assessed how the hospital utilizes these metrics to drive improvements and enhance organizational outcomes. This data-driven approach demonstrates a commitment to accountability and continuous learning.

HMC has previously secured Planetree certifications for its Ambulatory Care Center, Communicable Disease Center, Women’s Wellness and Research Center, Home Healthcare Service, Enaya and Daam Specialized Care Centers, and the Private Nursing Service. This widespread adoption of person-centered care principles across the corporation demonstrates a systemic commitment to improving the patient experience.

Looking ahead, HMC plans to continue its efforts to enhance person-centered care across all its facilities. The organization will likely focus on sustaining the improvements recognized by the Planetree certification and exploring new ways to further engage patients and families in their care. Ongoing monitoring of patient experience metrics and staff feedback will be crucial to maintaining this high standard of care, and future audits will be necessary to retain the certification.

Hamad Medical Corporation continues to invest in advanced technologies and training programs to ensure its staff remains at the forefront of medical innovation.
