Dakar erupted in celebration Tuesday as Senegal’s national football team returned home victorious from the Africa Cup of Nations. The team, greeted by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko upon arrival late Monday, is scheduled to parade through the capital city, culminating in a reception at the presidential palace. The celebrations follow Senegal’s 1-0 extra-time win against Morocco in a controversial final held in Rabat on Sunday.

The team’s arrival, delayed by several hours, did little to dampen the spirits of Senegalese fans who have been celebrating since Pape Gueye secured the winning goal. Thousands lined the streets, waving flags and sounding vuvuzelas as the bus carrying the champions made its way from the airport. The parade is expected to last several hours, traversing both residential and commercial areas of Dakar, including the iconic Corniche.

Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations Victory

Senegal’s triumph marks a significant moment for the nation, which has long been a strong contender in African football. This is only the second time Senegal has won the prestigious tournament, following their victory in 2022. The win is seen as a source of national pride and unity, particularly following a period of political tension. According to reports, the victory has boosted morale across the country.

Controversy Surrounds the Final Match

However, the final was not without its share of drama. Late in the game, with the score tied 0-0, a penalty was awarded to Morocco following a VAR review. Senegal’s players protested the decision and briefly walked off the pitch, citing earlier perceived injustices, including a disallowed goal. The Moroccan Football Federation has since filed a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA regarding the incidents during the match.

Despite the controversy, Edouard Mendy, Senegal’s goalkeeper, saved the penalty, and Pape Gueye’s goal in extra time sealed the victory. Local newspapers celebrated the win with headlines like “Heroic!” and “Unforgettable,” reflecting the widespread joy throughout Senegal. The team’s performance has sparked renewed interest in Senegalese football and the development of young talent.

Meanwhile, celebrations continued throughout Monday night and into Tuesday morning, with car horns, fireworks, and the constant sound of vuvuzelas filling the streets of Dakar. The outpouring of support demonstrates the deep connection between the Senegal national team and its fans. The parade route has been carefully planned to allow as many people as possible to participate in the festivities.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to review the Moroccan FA’s complaint and determine whether any disciplinary action will be taken. The outcome of this review could have implications for future tournaments and the use of VAR in African football. The incident has also fueled debate about refereeing standards and the fairness of decisions in high-stakes matches. The Africa Cup of Nations continues to be a focal point for the continent’s sporting passion.

Looking ahead, the Senegalese team is expected to continue preparations for upcoming international competitions, including the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The focus will now shift to building on this success and maintaining their position as one of the leading footballing nations in Africa. The long-term impact of this victory on youth development and investment in football in Senegal remains to be seen.
