The Zakat Affairs Department at the Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs in Qatar reported a record year for Zakat distribution in 2025, allocating QR 335,262,731 to eligible recipients both domestically and internationally. This significant increase reflects the department’s commitment to efficient governance and expanding its reach to those in need, fulfilling a core tenet of Islam focused on wealth redistribution and social welfare. The funds were used to support a wide range of programs, from basic needs assistance to educational opportunities and humanitarian aid.

Record Zakat Disbursements in Qatar for 2025

According to the department’s year-end report, the total Zakat outlays represent a substantial effort to address poverty and support vulnerable populations. Director of the Zakat Affairs Department, Mal Allah Abdulrahman Al Jaber, emphasized the department’s dedication to ensuring funds are allocated accurately and transparently, adhering to Sharia principles. This commitment aims to strengthen public trust in the Zakat system and maximize its positive impact on the community.

Supporting Families and Individuals

A significant portion of the 2025 Zakat funds, QR 175,123,122, was directly allocated to providing assistance to deserving families. This aid focused on meeting essential livelihood needs and bolstering familial stability, improving the quality of life for a large segment of the population. The department processed approximately 18,000 aid requests throughout the year, demonstrating its capacity to respond to community needs effectively.

Investment in Education

Recognizing education as a cornerstone of sustainable development, the Zakat Affairs Department allocated QR 102,931,317 in tuition assistance to 4,800 students. This investment aims to empower students from eligible families to pursue their academic goals without financial barriers, fostering human capital development. The ministry views educational support as a vital component of long-term poverty reduction.

Humanitarian Aid and Global Outreach

Qatar’s commitment to international humanitarian efforts was further demonstrated through the allocation of QR 9,684,980 in aid to Gaza. This assistance targeted those wounded and injured, reflecting the State of Qatar’s solidarity with the Palestinian people and its dedication to alleviating suffering. The department also provided support for 233 medical cases, 132 individuals burdened by debt, and 75 people with disabilities within Qatar.

Strengthening Sharia Compliance and Awareness

Beyond direct financial assistance, the Zakat Affairs Department actively engaged in promoting Sharia awareness and ensuring compliance. The department responded to 880 Sharia inquiries related to Zakat provisions and calculated the Zakat obligations for 201 companies. Additionally, 153 field visits were conducted to local businesses to encourage Zakat payment and promote corporate social responsibility. These efforts contributed to a reported increase in Zakat revenues exceeding 15% in 2025.

The department is also focused on modernizing its operations. Efforts are underway to enhance digital services, expand communication channels, and forge strategic partnerships to streamline the process of Zakat collection and disbursement. This includes improving the accuracy of calculations and accelerating the delivery of aid to those who need it most. Related initiatives include exploring fintech solutions for easier Zakat payments.

Looking ahead, the Zakat Affairs Department plans to continue refining its processes and expanding its programs. Future initiatives will likely focus on leveraging technology to improve efficiency and reach, as well as strengthening partnerships with local organizations to address evolving community needs. The department will also continue to monitor economic conditions and adjust its strategies accordingly to ensure the long-term sustainability of its Zakat programs. The impact of these ongoing improvements on future disbursement levels remains to be seen.
