As Oman gears up for a welcome long weekend, all eyes are turning to the hospitality sector, particularly Muscat hotels, and the anticipated influx of domestic travelers. The combination of Accession Day on Thursday, January 15, 2026, the Isra wal Mi‘raj holiday on Sunday, and the regular weekend of Friday and Saturday creates a substantial break, prompting citizens and residents to plan getaways. This surge in demand is particularly noticeable for destinations offering a respite from the warmer coastal temperatures.

Demand Soars for Staycations and Mountain Escapes

Leading hoteliers across the Sultanate are reporting a marked increase in reservations. Jagdeep Thakral, General Manager of dusitD2 Naseem Resort, confirmed, “We have witnessed an increase in bookings for this weekend,” attributing the growth to strong interest from local travelers seeking a relaxing break. This trend highlights the growing popularity of staycations within Oman, offering convenient and enriching experiences without the need for international travel.

The Allure of the Al Hajar Mountains

With temperatures dropping across Oman, the Al Hajar mountain range is emerging as the premier winter destination. Jabal Akhdar and Jabal Shams, in particular, are attracting visitors eager to escape the heat and enjoy the cooler climate. Jabal Shams, the highest peak in Oman, recently recorded a chilly 2.9 degrees Celsius, while Saiq registered an even lower 2.4 degrees Celsius.

Jabal Shams and Jabal Akhdar: Distinct Experiences

Despite the absence of snowfall this year, the crisp mountain air and breathtaking scenery continue to draw crowds. Akbar Abbas, Resort Manager of The VIEW Oman, eloquently described the appeal: “Oman’s mountain ranges captivate with a breathtaking variety that appeals to both nature lovers and adventure seekers.” He further elaborated on the unique offerings of each peak, stating, “The rugged peaks and deep gorges of Jabal Shams, along with the lush terraces of Jabal Akhdar, offer unforgettable experiences.”

The contrast between the two mountains provides options for diverse preferences. Jabal Shams is ideal for those seeking dramatic landscapes and challenging hikes, while Jabal Akhdar offers a more tranquil experience with its picturesque villages and terraced farms.

Hotels Prepare for a Busy Period

Hotels in the Al Hajar mountains are well-prepared for the anticipated rush. James Reeves, General Manager at the Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa, emphasized that long weekends consistently provide a significant boost to domestic tourism. “We have already been receiving a large number of inquiries for the coming days,” he noted, indicating a strong expectation for high occupancy rates.

Wellness and Rejuvenation in the Mountains

Beyond accommodation, hotels are enhancing the visitor experience with specialized offerings. Jala Spa & Wellness at Hotel Indigo Jabal Akhdar Resort & Spa is welcoming back advanced healing practitioner Rajeshwari Nerukar for a six-week residency until January 31, 2026. She will be providing specialized energy therapies designed to help guests unwind and restore their wellbeing after the festive season. This focus on wellness adds another layer of appeal to the mountain getaway.

A Unique Festive Experience

Hoteliers are also highlighting the special atmosphere of celebrating the holidays in the mountains. Reeves noted the unique charm of Jabal Akhdar, stating, “The region offers immense natural beauty, cultural richness and untold stories.” He added, “I am excited for our guests to discover this special neighbourhood—from exploring ancient villages to enjoying the cool tranquillity of the mountain air and indulging in rejuvenating wellness treatments. Every stay is designed to be a curated collection of unforgettable moments.”

One hotelier beautifully captured the magic, saying, “At 2,000 metres above sea level, where stars twinkle a little brighter and holiday magic arrives just a touch earlier, the experience is truly magical.” This sentiment underscores the appeal of escaping the city and immersing oneself in the serene beauty of the mountains.

Oman’s Mountains: A Year-Round Destination

Oman’s mountainous regions have long been a favorite destination for both locals and tourists, particularly during the winter months. The extended holiday period is expected to draw families, groups, and adventure enthusiasts to the highlands for activities like hiking, stargazing, and exploring the rugged terrain. Others will simply seek relaxation amidst the peaceful surroundings. The Muscat hotels located within these regions, and those serving as a base for exploration, are anticipating a vibrant and busy season.

Whether it’s the dramatic cliffs of Jabal Shams or the verdant terraces of Jabal Akhdar, Oman’s mountains continue to showcase the Sultanate’s diverse landscape and promise memorable holiday experiences. Abbas concluded, “Every visit to the mountains is an opportunity to create unforgettable memories. This long holiday and upcoming weekend are no exception.” With clean air, clear skies, and uninterrupted mountain views, the Al Hajar range is ready to welcome visitors seeking an extraordinary winter escape.
