Oman continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of its children, as evidenced by the successful completion of the “Values and Belonging” child rights awareness programme in Sohar. This initiative, a collaborative effort between the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), the “Children First” Association, and the Office of the Governor of North Al Batinah, culminated in a closing ceremony on Tuesday, marking the end of a nationwide effort to promote understanding and protection of young citizens.

The “Values and Belonging” Programme: A Nationwide Initiative for Child Rights

The final stop of the “Values and Belonging” programme in the Wilayat of Sohar, held under the patronage of HH Sayyida Dr. Mona Fahd Al Said, Chairperson of the Children First Association, signified a major milestone in Oman’s ongoing dedication to child rights. The programme, which spanned the entirety of 2025, wasn’t a localized event but a comprehensive undertaking reaching across the nation. It was implemented in 16 Wilayats across 8 Governorates, directly benefiting approximately 2,000 individuals from diverse backgrounds.

A Shared Vision for Childhood Development

In her keynote address, HH Sayyida Dr. Mona Fahd Al Said underscored the collaborative spirit driving the initiative. She emphasized that the programme embodies the shared vision of both the Children First Association and the OHRC – a vision focused on nurturing childhood, reinforcing authentic Omani national values, and providing robust protection for children in a rapidly changing world. The programme’s design specifically addresses the impact of global and social shifts on youth behavior, aiming to equip them with the resilience and values needed to navigate modern challenges.

Strengthening Child Protection Through Collaborative Efforts

Professor Dr. Rashid Hamad Al Balushi, Chairman of the Oman Human Rights Commission, reinforced the message of shared responsibility. He stated unequivocally that child protection is not the sole domain of any single entity, but rather a collective obligation encompassing all sectors of society. The OHRC plays a crucial role in this ecosystem, offering vital legal consultations and providing a channel for reporting instances of child rights violations. This commitment to accountability is central to the Commission’s mandate.

Expanding the Reach of the Programme

The “Values and Belonging” programme distinguished itself by extending its reach beyond the student population. Recognizing that a holistic approach is essential, the initiative actively engaged teachers, social workers, and parents. These key stakeholders were provided with valuable training in “Positive Parenting” techniques and effective intervention strategies. This focus on empowering adults to support children is a key component of sustainable child welfare.

The programme’s methodology incorporated interactive sessions, workshops, and visually engaging presentations. These tools were used to address contemporary issues such as bullying and, crucially, to equip participants with practical countermeasures. This proactive approach aims to create safer and more supportive environments for children in schools, homes, and communities.

Monitoring and Ongoing Support for Children in Oman

The closing ceremony also featured insightful working papers detailing the OHRC’s efforts in monitoring the implementation of national child rights strategies. These presentations highlighted the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that policies are not merely enacted but are actively enforced and evaluated for effectiveness. Additionally, the ongoing programmes of the Children First Association, dedicated to the development and protection of children throughout Oman, were showcased.

The event was attended by Mohammed Suleiman Al Kindi, Governor of North Al Batinah, demonstrating the high level of governmental support for initiatives focused on children’s rights. His presence underscored the importance placed on fostering a society where every child can thrive.

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Momentum for Child Rights in Oman

The successful completion of the “Values and Belonging” child rights awareness programme represents a significant step forward in Oman’s commitment to safeguarding its youngest citizens. However, the work doesn’t end here. Sustained collaboration between the OHRC, the Children First Association, and other stakeholders will be crucial to building on the momentum generated by this initiative. Continued investment in education, awareness campaigns, and robust legal frameworks will be essential to ensuring that all children in Oman have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
