The driver of the vehicle carrying British boxer Anthony Joshua during a fatal crash in Nigeria has been formally charged with reckless and dangerous driving. Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, faces legal proceedings following the incident on Monday that resulted in the deaths of two of Joshua’s associates. This Anthony Joshua crash has prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and raised questions about road safety on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The crash occurred on a busy highway linking Lagos and Ibadan in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, when the Lexus SUV driven by Kayode collided with a stationary truck. Authorities confirmed that Joshua, along with Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, were passengers in the vehicle. While Joshua was treated for injuries and subsequently released from hospital, Ayodele and Ghami tragically died as a result of the impact.

Investigation into the Anthony Joshua Crash and Charges Filed

Police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi stated that Kayode has been granted bail for five million naira (approximately €2,960) with two sureties, pending fulfillment of the bail conditions. The charges stem from allegations of reckless and dangerous driving, according to police reports. The investigation is ongoing to determine the precise cause of the accident and whether any other contributing factors were involved.

According to Matchroom Boxing, Joshua was discharged from a Lagos hospital Wednesday afternoon and is expected to remain in Nigeria for the coming days as he recovers. He reportedly visited the morgue to pay his respects to his deceased friends. The incident has drawn significant media attention both in Nigeria and internationally, given Joshua’s prominence as a world-renowned athlete.

Victims and Joshua’s Connection to Nigeria

Sina Ghami served as Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, while Latif Ayodele was a trainer. Social media posts from earlier on Monday showed Joshua and Ayodele enjoying a game of table tennis, highlighting their close relationship. The loss of both men has been deeply felt by Joshua and the wider boxing community.

Joshua has strong ties to Nigeria, stemming from his family roots and a period of schooling in the country during his childhood. He also holds Nigerian nationality. This connection adds a layer of personal significance to the tragedy, and has prompted an outpouring of support for Joshua from Nigerians.

Road Safety Concerns on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a major transportation artery in Nigeria, but it has a history of accidents due to heavy traffic, poor road conditions, and reckless driving. The incident involving Joshua has renewed calls for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations. Nigeria faces significant infrastructure challenges, and road maintenance is often underfunded.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotoso, confirmed Joshua’s discharge and stated he was deemed clinically fit to continue his recovery at home. The commissioner’s statement underscores the seriousness of Joshua’s injuries, despite his relatively quick release from hospital. The focus now shifts to supporting Joshua as he grieves the loss of his friends and continues his recovery.

As the legal proceedings against Kayode unfold, authorities will likely focus on gathering evidence and presenting a comprehensive case. The outcome of the trial could have implications for road safety regulations and enforcement in Nigeria. The public will be watching closely for updates on this case and hoping for justice for the victims and their families.
