Nigeria narrowly defeated Tanzania 2-1 in their opening match of the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday, securing a win despite a frustratingly wasteful performance in front of goal. The match, played in Fes, Morocco, saw Ademola Lookman score the decisive goal after a first-half header from Semi Ajayi was quickly cancelled out by Charles M’Mombwa. This victory marks the beginning of Nigeria’s campaign in Group C, following their disappointing failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles, considered strong contenders in the tournament, dominated possession but struggled to convert their chances. Star forward Victor Osimhen, the 2023 African Player of the Year, was a key figure in the attack, yet his finishing proved lacking on multiple occasions. The result highlights potential vulnerabilities despite Nigeria’s overall strength.

Nigeria Scrapes Win in Africa Cup of Nations Opener

The first half saw Nigeria consistently press forward, with Tanzania largely focused on defensive stability. Goalkeeper Zuberi Masudi suffered an early injury attempting to deny Akor Adams, and Adams himself came close to scoring with a header that struck the crossbar. The pressure eventually told when Alex Iwobi’s cross found Semi Ajayi, who headed home to give Nigeria the lead.

However, the second half brought a swift response from Tanzania. Just two minutes after Osimhen had a goal disallowed for offside, Charles M’Mombwa equalized for the Taifa Stars. Nigeria quickly regained the advantage, though, with Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman unleashing a powerful shot from outside the box that found the back of the net.

Key Moments and Player Performances

Despite the win, Nigeria coach Eric Chelle expressed concern over his team’s inability to capitalize on their numerous opportunities. Osimhen, in particular, drew attention for his missed chances, despite consistently threatening the Tanzanian defense. Lookman’s goal proved crucial, demonstrating his ability to deliver in key moments.

Meanwhile, in Tangiers, Senegal showcased their dominance with a convincing 3-0 victory over Botswana. Bayern Munich striker Nicolas Jackson scored a brace, with Cherif Ndiaye adding a late goal to seal the win. This result positions Senegal favorably in Group D, tied on points with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In Rabat, the Democratic Republic of Congo secured a narrow 1-0 win against Benin, thanks to a goal from Theo Bongonda. A VAR review initially threatened to level the score when a Bakambu goal was ruled offside, but the Leopards held on for the victory. This win places them at the top of Group D alongside Senegal.

The Africa Cup of Nations is a significant event in African football, offering a platform for showcasing talent and national pride. Nigeria’s performance, while resulting in a win, raises questions about their attacking efficiency. Senegal and DR Congo, on the other hand, demonstrated strong starts to their campaigns. The tournament is expected to draw significant attention to African football and its growing global influence.

Looking ahead, Nigeria faces a tougher test against Tunisia in their next Group C match, also in Fes, on Saturday. Chances created will need to be converted if they hope to progress deep into the tournament. Senegal and DR Congo will continue their Group D matches, aiming to solidify their positions at the top of the table. The early stages of the AFCON suggest a competitive tournament with several teams vying for the title.

The performance of teams like Tanzania and Benin, while resulting in losses, provides valuable experience and opportunities for growth within the continental competition. Fans and analysts will be closely watching how these teams adapt and compete in their remaining matches.
