Doha, Qatar – The seventh annual padel championship for Qatari students studying in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland concluded this week, showcasing a growing interest in the sport among international students. Sponsored by Qatar International Islamic Bank and organized by the Cultural Attaché in collaboration with the Qatar Padel Federation, the tournament saw participation from 20 teams representing various universities.

The championship, held recently in Doha, culminated in an awards ceremony where winning teams were recognized by Fahad bin Mohammed Al Kuwari, Cultural Attaché of the State of Qatar, and Colonel Mohammed bin Jassim Al Kuwari, Military Attaché. This event underscores Qatar’s commitment to supporting its students abroad through both academic and extracurricular opportunities.

Growing Popularity of Padel Among Qatari Students

The tournament’s increasing popularity reflects the rising global trend of padel, a racquet sport combining elements of tennis, squash, and badminton. According to the Qatar Padel Federation, the sport has seen significant growth in Qatar in recent years, and initiatives like this championship aim to extend that enthusiasm to students pursuing higher education overseas. This year’s edition marked the largest participation in the championship’s history, with 40 students competing.

Tournament Results and Recognition

Adel Ghanem of King’s College London and Rashid Wali of Loughborough University secured first place in the competition. The second-place winners were Tamim Al Hudaifi and Ali Al Hanzab from the University of Westminster, while Abdulrahman Al Mulla of the University of Hull and Hamad Al Marzouqi of the University of Liverpool finished in third. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education highlighted the success of the event and the positive impact on student well-being.

Fahad bin Mohammed Al Kuwari expressed his satisfaction with the tournament’s outcome, emphasizing the Cultural Attaché’s dedication to providing a comprehensive range of activities for Qatari students. He noted that these initiatives are designed to foster a strong sense of community and support students’ integration into their academic environments. He also thanked Qatar International Islamic Bank and the Qatar Padel Federation for their sponsorship.

Additionally, winners expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate and compete. Adel Ghanem, the tournament champion, acknowledged the support of the Cultural Attaché and the enthusiastic audience. Tameem Al Hudaifi, who placed second, highlighted the championship’s role in promoting mental well-being and alleviating feelings of homesickness by creating a familiar social atmosphere.

The event also served as a platform for fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship among the students. The competition provided a valuable outlet for stress relief and encouraged a healthy lifestyle, contributing to the overall well-being of Qatari students studying abroad. The focus on student life and creating a supportive network is a key component of Qatar’s international education strategy.

However, organizing events for students abroad presents logistical challenges, including coordinating travel, securing venues, and ensuring adequate support services. The Cultural Attaché’s success in overcoming these hurdles demonstrates its commitment to its students. The increasing demand for participation also requires ongoing investment in resources and infrastructure to accommodate future growth.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education plans to continue supporting similar initiatives aimed at enhancing the experience of Qatari students pursuing education internationally. The next sports event is currently unscheduled, but officials indicated they are exploring options for expanding the range of activities offered. Further details regarding future championships and potential expansion to other countries will likely be announced in the coming months, pending budget allocations and logistical feasibility.

Qatar International Islamic Bank played a crucial role in making this event possible.

Qatar Padel Federation continues to promote the sport nationally and internationally.

Ministry of Education and Higher Education is committed to supporting Qatari students abroad.
