Doha, Qatar – December 21, 2025 – A significant leadership change within Qatar’s security apparatus occurred today with the appointment of HE Major General Staff Mohammed bin Sultan bin Mohammed Al Salmeen Al Suwaidi as the new Amiri Guard Commander. The appointment, formalized through Amiri Decision No. 66 of 2025 issued by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, is effective immediately and will be officially recorded in the official gazette. This move signals a continuation of Qatar’s focus on maintaining a highly-trained and equipped protective force.

The decision comes as Qatar prepares to host several major international events in the coming years, including further sporting competitions and diplomatic summits. The Amiri Guard is responsible for the personal safety and security of the Amir and other members of the ruling family, as well as protecting key state institutions. The change in command is therefore viewed as a routine, yet important, step in ensuring ongoing security preparedness.

New Leadership for the Amiri Guard

Major General Al Suwaidi’s appointment follows a period of service within the Qatari armed forces, demonstrating a career dedicated to national security. Details regarding his previous roles and specific areas of expertise have not been widely publicized, however, sources indicate a strong background in military strategy and operational command. This appointment underscores the importance Qatar places on internal security and the protection of its leadership.

Responsibilities of the Amiri Guard

The Amiri Guard’s duties extend beyond personal protection. They are also responsible for maintaining security at Amiri palaces and other official residences. Additionally, the Guard plays a role in ceremonial functions and representing Qatar at international events. The unit operates with a high degree of discretion and is considered one of the most elite forces within the Qatari military.

Qatar has consistently invested in modernizing its security forces, including the Amiri Guard, with advanced technology and training. This investment reflects the nation’s commitment to safeguarding its stability and sovereignty in a complex regional environment. The country has also sought to strengthen security cooperation with international partners, including the United States and the United Kingdom, to enhance its capabilities in areas such as counter-terrorism and cybersecurity. These partnerships contribute to the overall effectiveness of Qatar’s defense infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the outgoing Amiri Guard Commander’s next assignment has not been publicly announced. It is standard practice for senior military officials to be reassigned to other key positions within the armed forces or government. The transition is expected to be seamless, with Major General Al Suwaidi already familiar with the operational procedures and protocols of the Guard.

In contrast to some regional neighbors, Qatar has maintained a relatively stable political landscape. This stability is attributed, in part, to the effectiveness of its security apparatus and the strong leadership of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. The appointment of a new Amiri Guard Commander is a proactive measure to ensure this stability continues.

The Ministry of Defence has not released a detailed statement outlining the specific priorities for the Amiri Guard under the new commander. However, analysts suggest a continued focus on enhancing counter-terrorism capabilities and strengthening cybersecurity defenses are likely to be key areas of emphasis. Qatar’s strategic location and growing economic influence make it a potential target for various security threats, necessitating a robust and adaptable security posture. The nation’s national security strategy emphasizes a multi-layered approach to defense, incorporating both conventional military capabilities and advanced technological solutions.

Looking ahead, the official gazette publication of Amiri Decision No. 66 is expected within the coming days. Further details regarding Major General Al Suwaidi’s background and future plans for the Amiri Guard may emerge in subsequent official statements. Observers will be watching for any adjustments to security protocols or operational strategies in the wake of this leadership change, particularly as Qatar prepares to host upcoming international events and navigate evolving regional dynamics. The long-term impact of this appointment on Qatar’s overall defense capabilities remains to be seen.
