Kuwait is bracing for continued unsettled weather with the Kuwait Meteorological Department issuing warnings for scattered thunderstorms, potentially heavy, across the country. These storms are particularly likely in southern and coastal regions, and the unstable conditions are predicted to persist into Friday morning. Residents are advised to take precautions as moderate to strong winds and rough seas are also anticipated. This period of inclement Kuwait weather marks a significant shift in conditions and necessitates awareness and preparation.

Current Weather Situation in Kuwait

As of Thursday, Kuwait is currently under the influence of a complex weather system. According to Acting Director of the Department, Dharar Al-Ali, a northwestern surface high-pressure system is interacting with a cold air mass. Simultaneously, a deepening upper-level low-pressure system is causing increased cloud cover, specifically the formation of scattered cumulonimbus clouds – those dark, towering clouds associated with thunderstorms.

This combination of factors is driving the current unstable atmospheric conditions. The resulting weather includes cool temperatures, partly to mostly cloudy skies, and northwesterly winds ranging from 15 to 50 km/h, with occasional gusts. The probability of rainfall, sometimes accompanied by thunder, is elevated, especially in the south and along the coast.

Impact on Coastal Activities

The forecasted winds will contribute to choppy seas, with waves expected to reach between 3 and 6 feet. This presents a hazard to maritime activities, including fishing, boating, and operations at Kuwait’s ports. The Department has urged those involved in these activities to exercise extreme caution and follow all safety guidelines. Potential disruptions to shipping and coastal infrastructure should also be considered.

Detailed Forecast: Thursday Through Saturday

The weather forecast for the next few days provides a more specific timeline for these changes.

  • Thursday: Expect cool conditions with a maximum temperature of 13-15°C. Scattered showers and thunderstorms remain likely, particularly in the southern and coastal areas. Winds will be northwesterly, gusting between 15 and 50 km/h, leading to moderate to rough seas with waves of 3 to 6 feet. Tonight, the threat of heavy, thundery rain continues with winds potentially reaching 65 km/h and possible light fog. Minimum temperatures will drop to 8-10°C, and seas will remain rough (4-7 feet).

  • Friday: A gradual improvement is anticipated, though conditions will still be cool to cold. Cloud cover and the chance of rain will decrease throughout the day. However, northwesterly winds will remain moderate to brisk, occasionally strong (20-60 km/h), potentially stirring up dust. Maximum temperatures will rise slightly to 16-18°C. The sea will be moderate to rough, with waves between 4 and 7 feet. Friday night will be colder, with minimum temperatures dropping to 6-8°C and lighter winds, along with a chance of light fog. Seas will calm somewhat, with waves of 2-4 feet.

  • Saturday: The Kuwait climate will transition towards more settled conditions. Cool weather is expected, with light to moderate variable winds (6-28 km/h). Maximum temperatures will hold steady at 16-18°C and the sea will be slight to moderate with waves of 1-3 feet. Saturday night will bring cold temperatures, light winds, and some scattered clouds, with minimums falling to 5-7°C and slight to moderate seas.

Safety Precautions During Unstable Weather

Given the potential for heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas, it is crucial for residents to take appropriate safety measures. These include:

  • Staying Indoors: During thunderstorms, seeking shelter indoors is paramount.
  • Securing Loose Objects: Ensure that outdoor furniture, decorations, and other loose items are securely fastened to prevent them from being blown away by strong winds.
  • Driving with Caution: If driving is unavoidable, reduce speed, increase following distance, and be mindful of potential hydroplaning conditions. Avoid driving through flooded areas.
  • Monitoring Updates: Stay informed about the latest weather updates from the Kuwait Meteorological Department and reputable news sources.
  • Coastal Awareness: Individuals near the coast should be especially vigilant regarding sea conditions and heed any warnings issued by authorities.

Looking Ahead & Staying Informed

While the worst of the instability is expected to subside by Saturday, residents should remain aware of ongoing conditions and heed any advisories from the meteorological department. This period of dynamic weather serves as a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preparedness.

The Kuwait Meteorological Department continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as needed. You can find the latest information on their official channels and through local news outlets. Staying informed is the best way to ensure your safety and well-being during this period of unsettled weather.
