This week’s global headlines offered a diverse mix of news, ranging from tourism accolades to severe weather events and legal developments. The Philippines received recognition as Asia’s best retirement destination, sparking interest in the cost of living for potential expats. Simultaneously, the UAE experienced significant rainfall and thunderstorms, with dramatic lightning strikes reported in Dubai. Several other notable stories unfolded, including updates on UAE holidays, a remittance issue, and a high-profile court case in Kerala, India.

The Philippines Crowned Asia’s Best Retirement Destination

The Philippines has been officially named Asia’s best retirement destination by the 11th TripZilla Excellence Awards. The Department of Tourism (DOT) celebrated this achievement, highlighting the country’s growing appeal to retirees. This recognition is expected to boost tourism and foreign investment in the Philippines, particularly within the retirement and healthcare sectors.

Cost of Living and Appeal

A major factor contributing to the Philippines’ success is its relatively low cost of living compared to other popular retirement locations in Asia. Estimates suggest that retirees can comfortably live on a monthly budget of between $800 to $1,500 USD, depending on lifestyle preferences and location. The country also boasts a warm climate, beautiful scenery, and a welcoming culture, further enhancing its attractiveness.

Additionally, the Philippine government offers various incentives for foreign retirees, including visa options and tax exemptions. News outlets report these incentives include the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV), simplifying the long-term stay process.

Severe Weather Impacts the UAE

The UAE experienced widespread and impactful weather this past week. Thunderstorms and hailstorms swept through Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, creating challenging conditions for residents. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued warnings regarding the adverse weather, advising caution and preparedness.

Dramatic Lightning Strike at Burj Khalifa

Perhaps the most visually striking event was a lightning strike captured on video at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, shared the footage, emphasizing the intensity of the storm. The rainfall led to temporary disruptions, but infrastructure largely remained resilient. UAE officials have urged residents to stay updated on weather forecasts and take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rain, anticipating more similar events in the coming months.

Further, UAE residents are already looking ahead to planned holidays. Announced dates for Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha in 2026 promise extended weekends, giving people opportunity to arrange travel.

Other Notable Headlines

Beyond the Philippines’ tourism win and the UAE weather, several other developments made headlines. A recent ruling in Abu Dhabi has allowed access to Bank of Baroda transaction files related to the case of B.R. Shetty, founder of NMC Healthcare, potentially offering new insights into alleged financial irregularities. Meanwhile, a UAE resident experienced issues with a remittance app, with Dh4,600 debited from their account but never received, highlighting potential vulnerabilities in these systems.

In sports and entertainment, Lionel Messi’s visit to India generated substantial attention and revenue. Reports indicate the tour came with a significant price tag, leading to questions about whether the investment aligned with the objectives. Finally, Emirates launched an auction for a 20-year Skywards Platinum membership, offering a unique opportunity for frequent flyers to secure elite status for an extended period.

A significant legal case also concluded, with Dileep, a prominent actor, acquitted in a 2017 assault case in Kerala, India. Manju Warrier, his former wife, expressed her disappointment with the verdict, stating that justice for the survivor remains incomplete. The case garnered widespread media coverage and sparked public debate about the treatment of women in the Indian entertainment industry.

Looking ahead, the focus will be on the ongoing investigations related to B.R. Shetty’s case and the resolution of the remittance issue reported by the UAE resident. Authorities are likely to review security protocols for remittance applications following the incident. The long-term impact of the Philippines’ recognition as Asia’s best retirement destination will also be closely monitored, as will the evolving weather patterns in the UAE and the preparations for future public holidays.
