Doha, Qatar – Despite a 2-0 defeat to CR Flamengo in the FIFA Challenger Cup on Saturday, Egyptian club Pyramids FC views its participation in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup as a significant milestone. The match, held at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, marked a historic moment for the relatively young club, showcasing its growing presence on the global football stage. Pyramids FC winger Ewerton expressed pride in the experience, even while acknowledging the challenge posed by the Brazilian giants.

The FIFA Challenger Cup, a new addition to the Intercontinental Cup format, pits teams from confederations outside of those represented in the main tournament against each other. This year’s competition featured Pyramids FC representing the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Flamengo as representatives of the CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation). The event aims to broaden the scope of the Intercontinental Cup and provide competitive opportunities for clubs from developing football nations.

Pyramids FC’s Historic Intercontinental Cup Appearance

Pyramids FC, founded in 2008, has rapidly ascended in Egyptian football, becoming a competitive force in both domestic and continental competitions. Their qualification for the FIFA Intercontinental Cup stemmed from a strong performance in the CAF Champions League, where they reached a notable stage last season. This participation represents a substantial leap forward for the club’s ambitions.

Ewerton, a Brazilian national who plays for Pyramids, described the match against Flamengo as particularly emotional. He revealed to FIFA that he grew up supporting Flamengo in his hometown of Amapa, Brazil, and proudly displayed shirts exchanged with Flamengo captain Bruno Henrique and playmaker Giorgian de Arrascaeta after the game.

Building Momentum Through Continental Success

The club’s recent success in African competitions has been instrumental in raising its profile. According to reports, Pyramids FC has invested heavily in its squad and infrastructure in recent years, attracting both local and international talent. This investment appears to be paying dividends, as evidenced by their performance in the CAF Champions League and now, their appearance in the Intercontinental Cup.

However, Ewerton acknowledged that his team faced a formidable opponent in Flamengo. He stated that Pyramids created scoring opportunities but ultimately failed to capitalize on them. Despite the loss, he emphasized the importance of the experience for the club’s future development.

Ewerton also highlighted the increasing quality of football in Egypt and across Africa. He believes that African teams are becoming more competitive on the international stage, challenging established footballing powers. This sentiment aligns with broader observations of the growing talent pool and improved coaching standards within African football leagues.

While Ewerton expressed his affection for Egyptian football, he reaffirmed his loyalty to Brazil regarding the FIFA World Cup. He continues to follow the progress of the Brazilian national team and hopes to see them succeed in future international tournaments. The presence of players like Ewerton in African leagues contributes to the exchange of footballing knowledge and techniques.

The defeat to Flamengo concludes Pyramids FC’s participation in the 2024 FIFA Intercontinental Cup Challenger phase. The broader Intercontinental Cup will continue with matches featuring teams from other confederations. The tournament’s organizers will likely evaluate the format and participation criteria for future editions, potentially expanding the number of competing clubs and confederations.

Looking ahead, Pyramids FC will focus on defending its position in the Egyptian Premier League and preparing for the next CAF Champions League campaign. The club’s management will likely analyze the lessons learned from the Intercontinental Cup experience to further refine its strategies and strengthen its squad. The long-term impact of this exposure on Egyptian football and the club’s ability to attract further investment remains to be seen.
