Doha, Qatar – The prestigious Late Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani Trophy was awarded yesterday at Al Rayyan Racecourse, marking a significant day for Qatar horse racing. Minister of Sports and Youth, H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani, presented the awards to the winning connections. The event showcased top-tier equestrian competition and celebrated the legacy of Sheikh Jassim.

Arman, representing Wathnan Racing, secured the coveted Late Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani Trophy, with Ali bin Yousef Al Kubaisi accepting the honor. RB Mary Lylah also claimed victory, winning the Grade 2 Qatar National Day Trophy, also with Al Kubaisi receiving the trophy on behalf of the owners. The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) hosted the event, with Vice Chairman Rashid bin Nasser Sraiya Al Kaabi in attendance.

The Significance of the Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani Trophy

The Late Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani Trophy is considered one of the most important races in the Qatari equestrian calendar. It’s a tribute to Sheikh Jassim, a pivotal figure in the development of thoroughbred horse racing in Qatar and the founder of Al Rayyan Racecourse. The trophy itself represents a commitment to breeding and racing excellence within the country.

A Showcase of Qatari Equestrian Talent

The event provided a platform for both local and international jockeys and trainers to compete. Wathnan Racing’s success with Arman highlights the growing strength of Qatari-owned and trained horses. The Qatar National Day Trophy, a Grade 2 race, further emphasized the high caliber of competition present at Al Rayyan Racecourse.

Qatar has invested heavily in its equestrian infrastructure in recent years, aiming to become a global hub for thoroughbred breeding and racing. This includes modernizing Al Rayyan Racecourse and supporting local breeding programs. The QREC plays a central role in regulating and promoting the sport throughout the nation.

The presence of Minister of Sports and Youth H.E. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani underscores the government’s support for equestrian activities. According to the ministry, these events contribute to Qatar’s sports tourism sector and enhance the country’s international profile. The national day celebrations often coincide with these races, adding a cultural dimension to the sporting spectacle.

The Grade 2 Qatar National Day Trophy, won by RB Mary Lylah, is a key component of the racing season, often attracting horses from neighboring Gulf states. This regional participation fosters collaboration and raises the competitive level. The race is typically held in December, aligning with Qatar’s National Day festivities.

While specific details regarding attendance figures and wagering amounts haven’t been released, the event appeared well-attended by enthusiasts and dignitaries. The QREC consistently works to improve the spectator experience, offering various hospitality options and family-friendly activities. The long-term goal is to attract a wider audience to Qatar’s racing events.

Looking ahead, the QREC is expected to announce the schedule for the upcoming racing season in early 2024. Further investment in breeding programs and international partnerships remains a priority. The continued success of Qatari-owned horses on the global stage will be a key indicator of the nation’s progress in the equestrian world, and the impact of initiatives like the Sheikh Jassim Bin Mohammed Bin Thani Trophy.
