Doha, Qatar – An exciting evening of racing culminated at Al Rayyan Racecourse yesterday with Arman securing victory in the prestigious Late Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani Trophy, a mile contest for 3YO+ Local Purebred Arabians. The win highlighted a strong performance by Wathnan Racing and jockey James Doyle, marking a significant moment in Qatar’s equestrian calendar. Several other notable races took place during the nine-race meet, showcasing the talent of both local and international horses.

The event, attended by Minister of Sports and Youth H E Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani and QREC Vice Chairman Rashid bin Nasser Sraiya Al Kaabi, saw Ali bin Yousef Al Kubaisi receive the trophy on behalf of Wathnan Racing. The Late Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani Trophy is a key event in the Qatari racing season, attracting top competitors and enthusiasts.

Arman Claims Victory in the Late Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed bin Thani Trophy

Arman, trained by Alban de Mieulle, demonstrated remarkable determination to win the feature race by a short head. The horse’s performance underscored the competitive nature of Purebred Arabian racing in Qatar. Doyle’s skillful ride was instrumental in securing the win, navigating a tightly contested finish.

Earlier in the day, RB Mary Lylah also ridden by Doyle, delivered a dominant performance in the Grade 2 Qatar National Day Trophy, winning by a substantial six lengths. This victory marked a consecutive retention of the title for Wathnan Racing and trainer Alban de Mieulle, following their success with Jabalah last year. The mare’s impressive turn of foot proved decisive in the 4YO+ Purebred Arabians contest.

Additional Race Highlights

The QA Gr3 Al Safliya Cup saw Simca Mille make a stylish return to Qatar, winning the 2350m contest for 4YO+ Thoroughbreds by 1½ lengths. This win secured a quick-fire double for Doyle and the connections. Doha Bu Thaila claimed the Local Thoroughbred Open Race over 2000m, while Thor’s Hammer returned to winning form in the Al Busayyir Cup, a 1600m Thoroughbred Conditions contest.

Meanwhile, Taxiwala retained his title in the Falcon Cup, a 3YO+ Thoroughbred Conditions sprint over 1200m, achieving his 21st career win. Taftan secured victory in the Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate, Labwa De Carrere (FR) won the Purebred Arabian Handicap, and Taymoor Al Shahania claimed the Purebred Arabian Conditions race, rounding out the day’s successes. These results demonstrate the breadth of talent within Qatar’s Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) racing program.

The consistent success of Wathnan Racing throughout the meet, with multiple wins and trophy presentations, highlights their growing influence in the Qatari racing scene. The presence of high-profile figures like Sheikh Hamad and Al Kaabi underscores the importance of these events to the nation’s sporting landscape. Thoroughbred racing and Arabian horse racing both featured prominently in the day’s results.

Looking ahead, the QREC is expected to continue hosting regular race meetings at both Al Rayyan and Doha Racecourse throughout the season. The focus will likely shift to preparing horses for upcoming international competitions, with Qatar aiming to further establish itself as a prominent hub for equestrian sports. Future race schedules and potential international participation will be key areas to watch in the coming months.
