The ports in Doha, Qatar, including Hamad, Ruwais, and Doha ports, experienced a significant increase in performance in December 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. The ports saw a surge in handling higher container volumes, RORO units, livestock, and vessels, with a total of 261 vessels received in December 2024, a 17% increase from the previous month. Container handling, RORO units, and livestock also saw significant rises of 13%, 100%, and 80% respectively during this period.

In December 2024, the container handling through the three ports stood at 121,547 TEUs, while general and bulk cargo, RORO, livestock, and building materials accounted for 76,182 tonnes, 16,719 units, 44,337 heads, and 27,058 tonnes respectively. Overall, the ports recorded a record number of containers and cargo handled in 2024, with over 2,500 vessels docked, and millions of tonnes of general cargo, RORO units, containers, livestock, and building materials handled throughout the year.

The maritime transport sector in Qatar is focused on developing and modernizing the industry in line with the Ministry of Transport’s strategic plans. The sector aims to ensure safe maritime navigation, meet safety requirements, and keep pace with international maritime developments. Hamad Port, in particular, is working towards becoming one of the key ports in the Middle East and the region, aiming to enhance Qatar’s economic diversification plans and become a leading global trade hub by 2030.

QTerminals, a key player in the maritime transport sector, highlighted the record-breaking performance of RORO units in December 2024. Hamad Port received 151 vessels during this month, with containers, bulk, breakbulk, and RORO units being efficiently handled. QTerminals also plays a vital role in supporting Qatar’s food and feed sectors by handling over 232,000 metric tonnes of barley annually at Hamad Port, contributing to the nation’s food security.

Hamad Port, Qatar’s main gateway to world trade, has implemented various measures to protect the environment and combat climate change. The port has installed monitoring systems to measure air and water quality, noise levels, and marine environment conditions. With its expanding network and modern infrastructure, Hamad Port ensures the smooth flow of goods and transhipment, providing exceptional services to both domestic and international clientele, thereby improving business environments and bolstering Qatar’s position in the global market.

In conclusion, the ports in Doha, Qatar, have shown strong performance in December 2024, with increased handling of containers, RORO units, livestock, and vessels compared to the previous year. With a focus on modernization and development, the maritime transport sector in Qatar aims to ensure safe maritime navigation, meet safety requirements, and keep pace with international maritime developments. Hamad Port, in particular, is working towards becoming a key player in the region, enhancing economic diversification plans, and becoming a leading global trade hub by 2030.
