In Qatar, genetic disorders prevalent in consanguineous marriages are a significant health concern, prompting the implementation of a mandatory premarital screening program in 2009. Tasnim Fadl, a genetic counselor at Qatar Foundation’s Qatar Precision Health Institute, emphasized the importance of these screenings in identifying genetic conditions that may be passed on to future generations. The high rate of consanguineous marriages in Qatar, at 54%, increases the risk of certain genetic disorders by up to 20 times. Through premarital screenings, individuals can understand their genetic risks and make informed decisions about their future family planning.

The premarital screening program in Qatar includes a wide range of tests for infectious diseases, hemoglobin disorders, and genetic conditions like cystic fibrosis and spinal muscular atrophy. Fadl highlighted the preventive nature of these screenings, aimed at protecting the health of couples and their potential children. By integrating precision medicine into the screening program, the goal is to gather data on the prevalence of genetic diseases in Qatar’s population, allowing for more targeted and comprehensive genetic counseling. This data can also support the development of broader health initiatives in the country.

Precision medicine enables a deeper understanding of genetic variations within the population, empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their genetic risks. Fadl emphasized the importance of early identification and avoidance of rare genetic disorders through premarital screenings. By reducing the prevalence of genetic conditions, the healthcare system can alleviate long-term financial burdens associated with treating these disorders. However, Fadl acknowledged that integrating genetic testing into mainstream healthcare faces challenges, such as logistical obstacles and social stigma, particularly for women at risk for certain conditions.

Despite these challenges, Fadl remains optimistic about the potential of genetic premarital screening programs in Qatar. As the country continues to advance in precision medicine, these screenings offer a promising pathway to a healthier society. While achieving widespread adoption of precision medicine will require time and effort, the long-term benefits are considered invaluable. By identifying genetic susceptibilities early on and providing comprehensive genetic counseling, individuals can make informed decisions about their future reproductive health, ultimately contributing to a healthier population in Qatar.
