As Russia continues to bombard Ukraine with high-intensity attacks, Ukrainian soldiers take a moment to observe a toned-down New Year’s celebration. The servicemen of the mortar team of the 57th motorised infantry brigade in Vovchansk combined Christmas and New Year festivities at their positions. Many soldiers have been unable to properly celebrate major holidays due to their duty calls. This is the third consecutive holiday season that these troops spend on the frontline defending their country from Russian attacks. Despite the ongoing war, their spirits remain unbroken as they continue to fight for their country’s freedom.

The soldiers express the difficulty of celebrating amidst the war, as there is no festive mood when their country is under threat. Communicating with their families whenever possible, they express their desire to go back home, but their job is not completed yet. Their motivation is to end the war as soon as possible. Despite Russia’s relentless attacks, the soldiers remain resilient and selflessly sacrifice for their country and people. Their New Year’s wishes extend to everyone, hoping for a happy and peaceful year for all.

On New Year’s Eve, Russian attacks continued to target Ukraine, demonstrating the same violence as seen throughout the years of war. Ukrainian forces reported Russian shells striking the northern city of Sumy, causing extensive damage to residential buildings, educational institutions, and social facilities. Police reported damage to civilian homes and outbuildings, with emergency rescue units deployed to the sites of the attacks. Some people were left without heating in their properties as winter approaches. Attacks also targeted the capital and other regions, showing Russia’s ongoing aggression.

In response to the Russian attacks, Ukraine’s military successfully shot down a Russian helicopter with a missile launched from a naval drone. This marks the first time that Ukraine has destroyed a Russian aerial target using an unmanned vessel. The Ukrainian-manufactured Unmanned Surface Vehicle shot down a Moscow Mi-8 helicopter near the Crimean Peninsula. Despite another Russian helicopter being struck by Ukrainian missiles, it managed to flee and reach an airfield. Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russian aggression with determination and resilience.

As the war rages on, Ukrainian soldiers remain steadfast in their mission to protect their country and citizens. The ongoing conflict has made it challenging for them to celebrate holidays with their families, but their dedication to ending the war and ensuring Ukraine’s victory keeps them motivated. Despite the hardships they face on the frontline, their spirits remain unbroken as they fight back against Russian attacks. The soldiers continue to make sacrifices for their people and country, with their New Year’s wishes reflecting their hope for a better and peaceful future for all.
