The recent joint statement from the United Arab Emirates, United States, Switzerland, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the African Union, and the United Nations in Switzerland highlights ongoing efforts to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian access, and achieve a cessation of hostilities in Sudan. The delegations emphasized the urgent humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people, the importance of respecting international humanitarian law, and the necessity of implementing commitments made under the Jeddah Declaration. Specifically, both parties were called upon to protect civilians, civilian infrastructure, allow freedom of civilian movement, and ensure safe passage for humanitarian aid and workers.

During a recent meeting, priority issues included the safe and unhindered passage of humanitarian aid and workers through all areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), including key routes such as the road from Gedaref through Wad Medani and Sennar. The delegations urged the RSF to open up areas of control, such as the Sennar junction, to expand access to humanitarian aid for millions of Sudanese citizens. Additionally, engagement with the RSF on this matter is ongoing as efforts continue to improve the humanitarian situation and protect civilians.

The presence of the RSF was welcomed as they showed readiness to take steps to enhance the protection of civilians and improve the humanitarian situation through additional measures. The delegations express their support for humanitarian actors planning to move through the Adre crossing and reiterate the need for safe and unhindered access for humanitarian cargo and workers in this corridor. Both parties are reminded of their obligations under international humanitarian law to safeguard civilian infrastructure, including essential bridges and roads necessary for humanitarian access.

The joint statement emphasizes the importance of continued dialogue and engagement with the RSF to address critical humanitarian issues in Sudan. Efforts are ongoing to ensure the RSF’s cooperation in allowing safe passage for humanitarian aid and workers and to uphold international humanitarian law regarding the protection of civilian infrastructure. The intention to meet with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) delegation upon their arrival underscores the commitment to resolving humanitarian challenges and protecting civilians in the region.

As the situation in Sudan evolves, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilians, uphold international humanitarian law, and facilitate the safe passage of humanitarian aid and workers. The joint efforts of the United Arab Emirates, United States, Switzerland, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the African Union, and the United Nations in Switzerland demonstrate a unified commitment to addressing the urgent humanitarian needs in Sudan. Continued collaboration and engagement with all relevant parties are essential to improving the overall humanitarian situation and ensuring the well-being of the Sudanese people.
