During the summer months, the rising temperatures in the UAE are leading to increased cases of Vitamin D deficiency. With people spending more time indoors to escape the extreme heat, they are missing out on the sunlight exposure needed to maintain adequate levels of Vitamin D in their bodies. This deficiency can lead to a variety of health issues, as seen in cases like R.K., a 27-year-old male from Yemen, who experienced symptoms of depression and extreme fatigue due to severely low Vitamin D levels. Treatment with oral supplements significantly improved his condition within three months.

Another case is that of Sarah, a 32-year-old office worker in Dubai, who also suffered from Vitamin D deficiency due to minimal sun exposure and spending weekends indoors. After experiencing symptoms like fatigue and muscle aches, she was prescribed oral supplements along with dietary modifications and outdoor exposure to raise her Vitamin D levels. Following the treatment, she reported significant improvements in her symptoms.

With the decrease in outdoor exposure during the summer months, the skin’s natural ability to produce Vitamin D is limited, leading to insufficiency in many residents. Dr. Ghada Badri, a specialist in Internal Medicine at Thumbay University Hospital, emphasized the importance of balancing Vitamin D levels through sunlight exposure. Dr. Nagwa Khalil Akasha, an endocrinologist at International Modern Hospital Dubai, recommended early mornings and late afternoons as the safest times for sun exposure to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses and skin damage.

Apart from sunlight exposure, there are natural dietary sources of Vitamin D, including fatty fish, egg yolks, fortified foods, certain mushrooms, and cod liver oil. However, for individuals with lower levels of Vitamin D, supplements may be necessary to maintain optimal levels, particularly for those with limited outdoor exposure or certain medical conditions. Daily maintenance doses typically range from 800 to 1000 IU for adults and 400 IU for children, based on factors like age, sun exposure, and dietary intake.

Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency to watch out for include fatigue, bone pain, muscle weakness, mood changes like depression, frequent infections, illnesses, and hair loss. Recognizing these symptoms and addressing them through proper supplementation and lifestyle changes can help individuals maintain adequate levels of Vitamin D and prevent associated health issues. It is crucial for residents in regions with extreme temperatures like the UAE to be mindful of their Vitamin D levels and take necessary steps to ensure they are getting enough sunlight exposure and dietary sources to stay healthy.
