Euro 2024 is taking place in Germany, three years after the soulless Euros due to coronavirus restrictions. This time, the football festival has seen fans from across the continent taking over the country. The atmosphere has been electric as fans have been the stars of the show, even amid travel chaos that has affected train routes and journeys to and from stadiums. The tournament has brought a throwback for many fans to what major tournaments used to be — a fun-filled few weeks free from concerns about geopolitics.

Germany’s central location in Europe has made it the perfect host for Euro 2024. The country shares land borders with eight of the 24 countries competing, and its large expat populations have added to the diverse mix of fans in attendance. The carnival atmosphere has also inspired a competitive tournament, with only a few games having a significant margin of victory. Incidents of trouble have been minimal, with a ban for an Albanian player following anti-Serb chants being the only major flashpoint so far.

The tournament has seen a mix of emotions and experiences for fans, including one German supporter who broke their hand during the opening match. The fan, Kai Flathmann, sang along to the anthem on a stretcher, showcasing the unwavering dedication and enthusiasm of football fans. As the tournament progresses to the knockout stages, the excitement and anticipation continue to build as teams battle for a spot in the next round.

The inclusive nature of Euro 2024 has been highlighted by fans of all nations mixing together, singing in the squares, and watching games in clubs, creating a welcoming environment for all. The tournament has also seen incredible support for all teams in the stadiums, leading to a more balanced and competitive playing field. Germany’s hope for a second ‘sommermarchen’ following the 2006 World Cup has come to fruition, with capacity having to be expanded at fan zones for the hosts’ matches.

As eight teams have been eliminated from the tournament, the celebrations continue for those who have progressed to the next stage. The last 16 fixtures promise an exciting lineup, with fans eagerly awaiting the outcome of the knockout rounds. The tournament has showcased the best of European football, bringing fans together from different nations to celebrate the sport and create lasting memories. Euro 2024 in Germany has truly been a football festival to remember.
