UAE peak summer: Residents demand midday break for food delivery riders

In Discovery Gardens, a Dubai resident witnessed a concerning incident where a delivery rider collapsed, possibly due to heat exhaustion. The incident occurred on a scorching day with temperatures reaching 51°C. The extreme heat has been a common occurrence recently, with the National Centre of Meteorology reporting temperatures surpassing 50°C. As summer officially begins in the UAE, authorities have implemented a midday break policy to protect workers from working under direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day. However, certain professions, such as food delivery services, are exempt from this policy.

To support delivery riders during the peak summer months, more than 6,000 rest stations have been set up across the UAE by government entities and the private sector. These stations are accessible through an interactive map and are intended for riders to use during the midday breaks. The Ministry of Human Resources has initiated this effort to ensure the health and safety of delivery service workers and provide them with a safe working environment. Despite these measures, there are still concerns about the safety of delivery riders during extreme heat.

Ion Gonzaga, a Filipino blogger, advocates for food delivery companies to refrain from providing delivery services during the midday break to protect riders from extreme heat. On the other hand, Sahar Chmayse, a medical manager from a pharmaceutical company, suggests capping the number of orders per driver during peak hours to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses. However, both agree on the importance of offering riders refreshments or tips to help them cope with the heat while working.

Recognizing the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of its riders, delivery riding companies have launched various initiatives to support their workers. Careem’s food delivery captains have the flexibility to set their schedules and work when it suits them best, without pressure or imposed shifts. Deliveroo has introduced Rider Summer Initiatives, including hydration stations and mobile rest stops in high-density rider zones. The company also provides valuable advice on hydration and heat management, distributes water, and offers enhanced rider kits with cooling vests and other safety gear.

In conclusion, as the UAE experiences extreme heat during the summer months, it is crucial to ensure the safety of delivery riders who work in challenging conditions. While measures like the midday break policy and rest stations aim to provide some relief, there is still a need for further steps to protect workers from heat-related illnesses. Delivery companies and customers can play a role in supporting riders by offering refreshments, tips, and understanding during the hot summer months. By working together, we can ensure the well-being of delivery riders and create a safer working environment for all.
