The UAE is piloting the use of an upgraded multi-cabin delivery robot that can deliver to multiple customers in one trip. The pilot testing, conducted by Aramex and Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ), is set to run for three months and aims to be fully operational by September. The multi-cabin feature of the robot is expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 500kg in three months. Initially, the robot will serve the Cedre Villas community in Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) by autonomously delivering over 1,000 packages to customers within the community.

Residents expecting Aramex packages will be provided with a secure pin code to ensure safety and security of deliveries. Additionally, the robot operations will be monitored by a mobile outlet at Cedre Shopping Centre, which will facilitate continuous loading and unloading. The robot is equipped with features such as a depth camera, human-bot interface elements, 360-degree video coverage, a swappable battery pack, and eight compartments for different parcel sizes. This initiative aligns with Dubai’s goal of converting 25% of its transportation system to autonomous mode by 2030 and integrates sustainable autonomous delivery vehicles into the urban fabric of Dubai.

The success of the pilot testing phase will be evaluated based on metrics such as safety, efficiency, and customer satisfaction, ultimately determining the future expansion of the initiative throughout Dubai. Dubai Silicon Oasis provides a supportive environment for autonomous and smart transportation solutions, making it an ideal testing ground for this delivery model. Muammar Khaled Al Katheeri, Chief Officer of Engineering and Sustainability at DIEZ, emphasized the role of advanced technology in promoting a greener future and enhancing sustainable urban development in Dubai. Tarek Abuyaghi, General Manager of Aramex, expressed excitement about the positive impact on the environment and urban living experience through this collaboration with DIEZ.

The introduction of carbon-neutral delivery robots at DSO showcases the dedication to incorporating advanced technology for sustainable urban development in Dubai. This collaboration between Aramex and DIEZ highlights the commitment to advancing innovative solutions for a greener future. The success of this initiative will contribute to Dubai’s vision of incorporating autonomous delivery as an essential part of urban logistics and aligns with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. The use of autonomous delivery vehicles in Dubai demonstrates the city’s progress towards achieving sustainable transportation goals and integrating cutting-edge technology into everyday urban life.
