The General Directorate of Civil Defence in Bahrain has reported approximately 1,189 fire incidents in various locations such as homes, facilities, warehouses, and vehicles during the first half of 2024. Brigadier General Pilot Ali Al-Kubaisi, the Director General of the department, stressed the importance of taking precautions and preventive measures to avoid accidents, especially during the high summer temperatures. The main causes of fires in homes and buildings were identified as negligence and children playing with electrical appliances and flammable materials like lighters and matches.
General Al-Kubaisi emphasized the need for regular inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment and connections, as well as avoiding overloading electrical circuits and proper maintenance of gas cylinders. He also recommended keeping fire extinguishers on hand in case of emergency. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of conducting periodic inspections of vehicles and avoiding leaving flammable materials inside, such as lighters, gas canisters, and batteries. The Director General advised vehicle users to slightly open car windows to prevent potential fires.
In order to ensure the safety of homes and property, General Al-Kubaisi provided recommendations for travellers such as disconnecting electrical appliances, turning off air conditioning, closing gas cylinders, and installing security and early warning devices like cameras and alarms for rapid incident detection and response. The General Directorate of Civil Defence has prepared various awareness programmes and campaigns for the summer season to educate the public on fire safety. These initiatives encompass training courses, practical workshops, and targeted campaigns focusing on the safety of different locations such as places of worship, swimming pools, commercial and industrial establishments, shared housing, vehicles, and fuel stations.
