The University of Wyoming has established the first academic Bitcoin Research Institute to promote high-quality Bitcoin research across various academic disciplines. Dr. Bradley Rettler, associate professor of Philosophy and author of “Resistance Money: A Philosophical Case for Bitcoin,” has been appointed as the head of the institute. The BRI aims to produce peer-reviewed publications about Bitcoin and address the lack of quality research in the field. Andrew M. Bailey, lead author of the book, will also join the institute as faculty starting August.

The Bitcoin Research Institute at the University of Wyoming is set to officially open in August, aligning with the Fall 2024-2025 academic year. The institute plans to create faculty positions to incentivize and reward academic researchers, encouraging young scholars to pursue Bitcoin-related projects. Additionally, the BRI will organize various events such as book workshops, seminars, and public outreach programs to promote research in the field of Bitcoin.

Wyoming has become well-known for its pro-crypto stance, with Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis leading the charge as a long-time crypto advocate. Senator Lummis believes that incorporating Bitcoin into the nation’s reserves could strengthen the U.S. dollar. She has also proposed purchasing 1 million BTC over five years as part of the nation’s reserve. The state’s favorable regulatory environment for crypto and its proximity to renewable energy sources have facilitated the establishment of the Bitcoin Research Institute.

The University of Wyoming’s Bitcoin Research Institute is seeking donations from the community, including contributions in both Bitcoin and fiat currencies. The institute aims to promote academic research in the field of Bitcoin and provide a platform for scholars, policymakers, journalists, and the public to access high-quality research. With plans to conduct various events and incentivize researchers, the BRI is set to play a significant role in advancing the understanding of Bitcoin across different academic disciplines.

Overall, the launch of the University of Wyoming’s Bitcoin Research Institute marks a significant milestone in the realm of academic research on cryptocurrencies. With Dr. Bradley Rettler at the helm and support from various contributors, the institute is poised to become a hub of high-quality research on Bitcoin. The institute’s focus on producing peer-reviewed publications and fostering academic talent demonstrates its commitment to elevating the standard of research in the field. As Wyoming continues to embrace its crypto-friendly aspirations, the Bitcoin Research Institute is set to play a pivotal role in advancing knowledge and innovation in the world of cryptocurrencies.
