A plane carrying aid to southern Ethiopia in response to landslides caused by heavy rainfall has been dispatched by the UAE. The UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, highlighted the country’s commitment to helping communities in need worldwide. The deadly landslide in Ethiopia is the deadliest on record in the country, with the death toll rising to 257, and the UN warning it could reach 500. More than 21 million people in Ethiopia rely on humanitarian aid due to conflicts and natural disasters like flooding and drought.

The UN’s humanitarian agency OCHA reported a similar but lower-scale landslide in the same area in May, which killed over 50 people. Seasonal rains in South Ethiopia caused flooding, mass displacement, and damage to livelihoods and infrastructure. Previous disasters in Ethiopia include a garbage dump collapse in 2017 that claimed 113 lives. The deadliest landslide in Africa was in Sierra Leone in 2017, where 1,141 people perished. Mudslides in Uganda’s Mount Elgon region in 2010 killed over 350 people.

The UAE’s aid to Ethiopia is part of their ongoing efforts to provide assistance to communities affected by natural disasters globally. The UAE has been actively involved in humanitarian missions, offering support to those in need during times of crisis. The devastating landslides in Ethiopia have caused significant loss of life and destruction of property, highlighting the urgent need for aid and relief efforts. The international community has rallied together to support Ethiopia during this challenging time.

The UAE’s swift response to the landslides in Ethiopia underscores their commitment to helping vulnerable communities in the aftermath of natural disasters. The aid provided by the UAE will help alleviate the suffering of those affected by the landslides and contribute to the recovery and rebuilding efforts in Ethiopia. The UAE’s support comes at a crucial time for Ethiopia, as the country grapples with the aftermath of the deadly landslides and the ongoing impact of climate-related disasters.

The UAE’s assistance to Ethiopia serves as a reminder of the importance of international cooperation and solidarity in times of crisis. By coming together to support and uplift communities in need, countries can make a significant impact in alleviating suffering and rebuilding affected areas. The UAE’s aid to Ethiopia showcases the power of collective action and highlights the positive impact that can be achieved when countries unite to provide support and relief to those in need.
