Doctors in the UAE have supported recent research suggesting that genetics play a significant role in children’s picky eating habits, rather than parenting styles. Childhood obesity is a growing concern in the country, with a significant percentage of school-going children and adolescents classified as overweight or obese. Dr. Yamen Fayez Elmughanni, a Consultant Pediatrician and Neonatologist, explained that genetic differences can account for up to 74% of food fussiness in children, indicating a strong genetic component to picky eating tendencies.

Healthcare professionals emphasized that some children may be more sensitive to tastes and textures, leading them to be picky eaters. Dr. Osama Elsayed Rezk Elassy, a clinical assistant professor, highlighted that genetics may be a key factor in a child’s picky eating behavior. If parents or siblings are picky eaters, children may also exhibit similar tendencies. However, being overly selective about food choices can lead to nutrient deficiencies and other health issues like iron deficiency anemia.

To address picky eating habits, parents can engage their children in the cooking process and provide a variety of food options. Involving children in meal preparations and presenting colorful plates with a mix of fruits and vegetables can help boost their interest in trying new foods. If these strategies do not work, seeking expert advice from healthcare professionals, including dietitians, is important to address picky eating behavior. Dr. Mamata Bothra, a Specialist pediatrician, emphasized the importance of ensuring children meet their nutritional needs in creative and non-coercive ways.

Overall, understanding the genetic influence on picky eating habits can help parents and healthcare professionals develop effective strategies to encourage healthy eating habits in children. By focusing on providing nutritious food options and involving children in meal preparations, parents can help their children overcome picky eating tendencies. Collaboration with healthcare professionals can also ensure that children’s nutritional needs are met to support healthy growth and development. It is essential for parents to be mindful of potential health concerns related to picky eating and seek appropriate guidance when needed.
