As families in the UAE return from their summer holidays, health experts are concerned about potential health risks for children due to the change in weather and environment. Children who traveled to various parts of the world were exposed to different climates, making them more susceptible to illnesses as they readjust to the UAE’s weather. With the country transitioning from summer heat to a cooler autumn, the fluctuating weather may pose a risk for children returning from regions with cooler climates. Doctors warn that the return to the warm UAE environment, along with cooler evenings, can lead to illnesses.

Dr. Amjad Mouhammad Haider, a consultant pediatrician at International Modern Hospital Dubai, emphasizes that exposure to different climates during holidays can increase the risk of illness for children. Their immune systems may not be fully adapted to new pathogens encountered abroad, making them more susceptible to infections. Common health issues after returning from travels include respiratory infections, gastrointestinal problems, skin conditions, parasitic infections, jet lag, and fatigue. Dr. Noher Moustafa, a pediatrics specialist at Medeor Hospital in Abu Dhabi, highlights common illnesses such as the common cold, acute pharyngitis, coughs, acute bronchitis, pneumonia, and gastrointestinal issues like acute gastroenteritis.

Jet lag can impact the health of both adults and children, affecting their routine and weakening the immune system. Dr. Haider stresses that time zone changes and long travel durations can lead to sleep disturbances and general fatigue. It is recommended to get vaccinated before traveling to certain areas, and post-travel vaccinations may be necessary if the child was exposed to specific diseases. Dr. Fiaz Ahamed, an infection control specialist at Thumbay University Hospital, emphasizes the importance of the seasonal flu vaccine as winter approaches. Protecting against respiratory infections like flu and pneumonia is crucial, particularly for young children at higher risk.

To strengthen immunity, it is essential for children to receive all mandatory and optional vaccines, especially the flu vaccine at the start of the winter season. Dr. May Shaker, a general practitioner at Zulekha Hospital, advises parents to ensure their children are vaccinated against the seasonal flu. Parents are encouraged to get vaccines before school starts, ideally at the beginning of September. It is vital to monitor changes in a child’s behavior or health in the first week after returning to the UAE, ensuring they stay hydrated and maintain a balanced diet for recovery and adjustment.

Parents should allow their children plenty of rest, especially if they are experiencing jet lag or fatigue. If a child shows signs of illness, consulting a healthcare provider is recommended. Overall, returning from holidays abroad can expose children to various health risks due to climatic changes, stress from travel, and exposure to different environments. By staying aware of potential illnesses, maintaining vaccinations, and monitoring their child’s health, parents can help ensure a smooth transition back to the UAE’s environment for their children.
