The cost of living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been on the rise during the first half of 2024, even as the quality of life ranking in the country saw significant improvement. According to global database provider Numbeo, Dubai’s ranking in the cost of living index jumped from 138th to 70th, while Abu Dhabi climbed from 164th to 75th during the January-June period. Factors such as inflation and rising rents have contributed to the increase in the cost of living, with petrol prices also experiencing fluctuations due to global influences.

Inflation in the UAE has been impacted by global factors, as the country heavily relies on imports for consumer products. Prices of petrol, which are linked to international rates, have seen fluctuations throughout the year. Rental prices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have been on the rise post-pandemic, driven by an influx of foreign professionals and high-net-worth individuals. The Property Monitor report for May 2024 highlighted a significant increase in rental prices, with prices doubling in some communities.

To address rising prices and inflation, the UAE Ministry of Economy has implemented price caps on nine basic commodities, including cooking oils, dairy, rice, sugar, and bread. Retailers are required to seek approval from the Ministry before increasing prices to ensure affordability for consumers. In terms of quality of life, both Dubai and Abu Dhabi have seen improvements in their rankings, driven by increased purchasing power and improved facilities in sectors such as healthcare and education for residents.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai both experienced a substantial increase in their quality of life ranking in the first half of 2024. Numbeo ranked Abu Dhabi at 17th and Dubai at 49th among 178 cities, reflecting the positive changes in living standards. The UAE was classified as a high-income country by the World Bank, aligning it with countries such as Canada, Japan, and the United States. The government has also introduced initiatives to enhance quality of life, including housing schemes for citizens, support measures in healthcare and education sectors, and mandatory healthcare insurance starting next year.

In terms of safety, Abu Dhabi was recognized as the world’s safest city, followed by Doha and Dubai. The UAE’s commitment to improving the overall well-being of its residents is evident through various measures and initiatives aimed at enhancing living standards. With a focus on affordability, safety, and quality of life, the UAE continues to strive towards providing a conducive environment for its residents and citizens. By addressing factors contributing to the rise in the cost of living and focusing on enhancing quality of life, the UAE is poised to maintain its position as a high-income country with desirable living standards.
