Georgetown University Qatar recently hosted a public talk by former Greek Ambassador Dimitri Alexandrakis, who serves as the university’s Distinguished-Diplomat-in-Residence. The event, titled What Makes a Good Diplomat?, offered insight into the key qualities and experiences that define effective diplomacy. Ambassador Alexandrakis drew from his extensive 42-year career as a diplomat, including his recent tenure as Ambassador of Greece to Iran amidst regional challenges and the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized the humanitarian aspect of diplomacy, citing his role in facilitating a vaccine donation to Iran’s Red Crescent as an example of diplomacy’s positive impact.

Throughout the talk, Ambassador Alexandrakis highlighted the importance of a constant commitment to diplomacy, with ambassadors being on call 24 hours a day. He stressed the significance of understanding the culture and social dynamics of the host country. Additionally, he mentioned how humor can play a vital role in easing tensions and building rapport in diplomatic interactions. Drawing on his experiences in various ambassadorial roles worldwide, Ambassador Alexandrakis shared valuable lessons learned from his career.

The Ambassador also touched on global diplomatic relations involving key players such as the United States, Iran, Russia, and China. He underscored the importance of creating political space for meaningful human-to-human connections as a crucial element for diplomatic success. In his final remarks, Ambassador Alexandrakis emphasized the necessity of dialogue and cooperation between countries for world peace.
