Sidra Medicine, a member of Qatar Foundation, has recently opened a Memory Clinic specifically tailored to address the unique mental health needs of women aged 60 and above in Qatar. This new clinic is part of the hospital’s strategic expansion of wellness and mental health services for women in the country. The Memory Clinic offers a range of services, including preventative measures for those looking to maintain cognitive health as well as specialized care for those already diagnosed with dementia.

Dr. Sami Omer, an Attending Physician and Psychiatrist, heads the Memory Clinic and provides comprehensive and compassionate care for various cognitive concerns, focusing on early detection, diagnosis, and management of dementia. According to Dr. Sami, it is crucial to recognize that memory loss is not a normal part of aging and seeking professional help is necessary for individuals experiencing such symptoms. Early intervention allows for timely treatment and management strategies, potentially improving outcomes and slowing the progression of conditions like dementia.

Research indicates that women are at a higher risk of developing dementia, with up to 40 percent of cases being preventable. The Memory Clinic at Sidra Medicine implements practical strategies to reduce this risk, offering personalized guidance on exercise, lifestyle modifications, sleep hygiene, and dietary recommendations to promote brain health. The clinic collaborates with other departments such as internal medicine and gynecology to provide personalized weight management programs, encourage regular physical activity, and educate on the importance of blood sugar control in relation to mental health.

According to Dr. Sami, age is the primary risk factor for dementia, with the risk increasing significantly after the age of 65. By age 90, the risk of dementia can reach 30 percent, highlighting the importance of preventive measures at an early age. As dementia can take several years to develop, focusing on prevention between the ages of 45 and 60 is crucial. The Memory Clinic aims to raise awareness about dementia and provide individuals with the tools and resources needed to reduce their risk and enhance their cognitive health.

The Memory Clinic under Sidra Medicine’s Women’s Mental Health Service is a private facility that does not require a referral for individuals seeking care. The clinic offers a holistic approach to mental health, recognizing the significance of cognitive health in overall well-being. By providing personalized care and education, the Memory Clinic empowers women to take control of their cognitive health and make informed decisions about their well-being. Whether individuals are concerned about memory loss or have been diagnosed with dementia, the clinic offers support and guidance every step of the way.

With its focus on early detection and prevention, the Memory Clinic at Sidra Medicine is a valuable resource for women in Qatar seeking to proactively address their cognitive health. By offering a range of services tailored to individual needs and collaborating with other medical disciplines, the clinic is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for women aged 60 and above. Through education, personalized care, and practical strategies, the Memory Clinic aims to empower women to prioritize their mental health and well-being, ultimately improving outcomes and quality of life for individuals at risk of dementia.
