Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step in cancer research by officially joining the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized agency of the World Health Organization. The announcement was made during the 66th session of the IARC’s Governing Council in Lyon, France. Dr. Nahar Al-Azemi, Secretary-General of the Saudi Health Council, highlighted that this membership illustrates the nation’s dedication to disease prevention and control, specifically in combating cancer through scientific research. The Kingdom’s approach to cancer includes prevention, treatment, and addressing the social aspects of the disease. This move to join the IARC reflects Saudi Arabia’s broader health strategy to strengthen its capabilities in fighting cancer on a national and global level.

The celebration of Saudi Arabia’s membership in the IARC was attended by Fahad Al-Ruwaily, the Kingdom’s ambassador to France and permanent representative to UNESCO, and a delegation led by Dr. Nahar Al-Azemi. The event also saw the presence of key figures in cancer research in Saudi Arabia such as Mushabbab Ali Al-Asiri, General Director of the National Cancer Center, Ali Al-Zahrani, deputy director at the research center of King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, and Samar Al-Homoud, consultant colorectal surgeon at the hospital and chair of the IARC Ethics Committee. This indicates a strong collaborative effort between various institutions in the country to address the challenges posed by cancer and work towards finding solutions through research and innovation.

By joining the IARC, the Kingdom is enhancing its capabilities in the fight against cancer, demonstrating its commitment to tackling the disease both nationally and globally. This partnership with the IARC will enable Saudi Arabia to collaborate with international experts in cancer research and further advance its knowledge and expertise in the field. It also opens up opportunities for the Kingdom to contribute to global efforts in combating cancer and sharing its own experiences and best practices with the international community.

The IARC membership is a crucial milestone in Saudi Arabia’s commitment to advancing cancer research and implementing effective strategies for disease prevention and control. By joining forces with the IARC, the Kingdom is aligning itself with global efforts to address the challenges posed by cancer and work towards finding innovative solutions. This partnership will not only benefit Saudi Arabia in its quest to improve cancer outcomes but also contribute to the larger goal of reducing the global burden of cancer. Through collaboration with the IARC and other international partners, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a key player in the fight against cancer and paving the way for a more effective and coordinated approach to tackling the disease worldwide.

The presence of key figures in Saudi Arabia’s cancer research community at the celebration of the Kingdom’s IARC membership underscores the importance of collaboration and teamwork in addressing the challenges posed by cancer. By bringing together experts from different institutions and disciplines, Saudi Arabia is fostering a culture of innovation and knowledge-sharing that is essential for making progress in cancer research. The commitment of individuals like Dr. Nahar Al-Azemi, Mushabbab Ali Al-Asiri, Ali Al-Zahrani, and Samar Al-Homoud to working together towards a common goal highlights the dedication of Saudi Arabia’s healthcare professionals to improving cancer care and outcomes for patients in the country and beyond. This collaborative spirit will play a key role in advancing cancer research and ultimately making a positive impact on the lives of those affected by the disease.

In conclusion, Saudi Arabia’s membership in the IARC marks a significant milestone in the Kingdom’s efforts to combat cancer and further its capabilities in cancer research. By joining forces with the IARC, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a key player in the global fight against cancer and demonstrating its commitment to improving cancer outcomes both nationally and internationally.
