Residents in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates are set to benefit from lower health insurance premiums as the UAE gears up to implement a mandatory health insurance scheme for all employees. This move is expected to bring significant financial relief to both employers and residents in these regions. Nabil Shanawani, assistant general manager of the life and medical division at Al-Buhaira National Insurance in Sharjah, shared insights about the forthcoming changes at the Insurance Meet 2024 event organized by Thumbay Healthcare.

The mandatory health insurance scheme, scheduled to launch on January 1, 2025, aims to provide affordable healthcare for private sector employees and domestic workers who do not have company-sponsored coverage. The government is working to ensure that premiums in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates remain lower than those in Dubai to prevent imposing additional financial burdens on businesses. While the specific regulations regarding minimum benefits and plan types are still under consideration, residents are currently required to provide proof of coverage for visa renewals.

Experts believe that the initiative will enable residents in the Northern Emirates, many of whom lack health coverage, to access essential medical services. By introducing value-based care through insurance coverage, the overall health outcomes and well-being of the community are expected to improve. Dev Maitra, founder and MD of Savington International Insurance Brokers, emphasized that the health insurance premiums in the Northern Emirates will be more affordable compared to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, offering significant benefits to residents in the region.

The integration between insurance companies and immigration departments has already begun to enable real-time verification of an individual’s insurance status, which will be fully operational by the implementation date in 2025. While residents will have access to hospitals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, there may be restrictions on premium healthcare networks. Authorities are working diligently to ensure that healthcare remains accessible and affordable throughout the country. With ongoing discussions and collaborations, the government is expected to provide further details on the mandatory health insurance scheme in the coming months, outlining the benefits and coverage options available to residents.

The industry experts at the Insurance Meet 2024 event highlighted that the introduction of an affordable basic medical insurance model in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates, similar to Dubai’s existing system, will help reduce employers’ healthcare costs. This strategic approach aims to create a conducive business environment by offering cost-effective solutions for medical insurance, thus positively impacting the overall economy. As the UAE prepares to roll out the nationwide mandatory health insurance scheme, stakeholders from international and regional insurance companies, alongside government regulators, are coming together to ensure its successful implementation and deliver essential training to all stakeholders involved.

In conclusion, the imminent introduction of the mandatory health insurance scheme in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates is a significant milestone in advancing healthcare accessibility and affordability for residents in these regions. The focus on providing value-based care through insurance coverage underscores the government’s commitment to improving health outcomes and community well-being. With lower premiums and enhanced benefits, the scheme is poised to benefit both employers and residents by offering comprehensive medical coverage at affordable rates. As preparations continue for the scheme’s implementation, ongoing collaborations between industry stakeholders and government regulators are vital to ensure a seamless transition and effective delivery of healthcare services to all residents.
