Qatar’s commitment to advancing human rights globally was reaffirmed during the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, HE Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, highlighted the country’s dedication to upholding, respecting, and protecting human rights universally. Qatar pledged to continue its active cooperation and engagement with international partners to accelerate the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The country is committed to maintaining the proactive and constructive role it has played on the Human Rights Council.

Qatar emphasized its commitment to working with member states to empower the Council in achieving its objectives. The country’s recent election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term reflects the trust and respect the international community has for Qatar. HE Sheikha Alya Al Thani noted that Qatar’s victory underscores its reputation as a credible and effective international partner. The country’s policy prioritizes the respect, promotion, and protection of human rights with human development at its core. Qatar has a robust constitutional and legislative framework that enshrines human rights and fundamental freedoms for all.

Qatar’s commitment to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) as a mechanism to assess progress and share best practices in human rights was emphasized by HE Sheikha Alya Al Thani. Qatar will present its fourth national report to the UPR Working Group during its 47th session in Geneva this November. The country continues to support the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and looks forward to continued collaboration. Qatar is proud to host the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia and the Arab Region since 2009, which has been effective in promoting human rights in the region.

HE Sheikha Alya Al Thani condemned the severe violations faced by the Palestinian people, particularly the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza. The Human Rights Council’s report expressed grave concern over the humanitarian, social, and economic crisis in Gaza, exacerbated by repeated Israeli military operations. Qatar strongly condemns these violations as clear breaches of international humanitarian and human rights laws. The country is against any acts targeting civilians and any forced displacement of the Palestinian people from Gaza. Qatar remains committed to supporting the Palestinian people and advocating for their rights on the global stage.
