The Royal Opera House Muscat recently hosted a captivating performance by Indian classical musician Nishat Khan, accompanied by the European Philharmonia under the direction of Walter Proost. The concert showcased Khan’s sitar mastery in a unique setting that combined Indian classical tradition with Western orchestral elements. Audiences were treated to a blend of evening and night ragas in the first half, followed by a sitar concerto in the second half, providing a truly immersive musical experience. Known for his virtuosity and contributions to Indian classical music, Khan has performed at prestigious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York.

The European Philharmonia, founded in 2013, aims to make classical music more accessible to the public under the artistic leadership of Walter Proost. The orchestra, consisting of experienced musicians and emerging talents, has performed at esteemed venues across Belgium, the Netherlands, and beyond. Collaborating with renowned soloists like Boris Belkin and José van Dam, the ensemble is dedicated to nurturing young talent while engaging with diverse audiences. The recent collaboration with Nishat Khan at the Royal Opera House Muscat exemplified the orchestra’s commitment to showcasing global talent and promoting cultural exchange through music.

Umberto Fanni, the Artistic Director and Director General of the Royal Opera House Muscat, emphasized the importance of hosting world-class artists like Nishat Khan to bridge cultures through music. Khan’s performance of his symphony, “Gate of the Moon,” alongside the European Philharmonia was described as an extraordinary musical journey that deeply resonated with the audience. Khan expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to perform at the Royal Opera House Muscat, acknowledging the venue’s commitment to arts and culture. His experience playing the sitar concerto in such a magnificent space was truly memorable.

Looking ahead, the Royal Opera House Muscat continues to present exceptional global talent to its audiences. Fado singer Cristina Branco will perform Mais que Fado on November 5, offering a soulful evening of Portuguese music exploring themes of love and loss. Following that, the Military Music: Oman and the World festival will take place from November 7 to 9, featuring Oman’s military and police bands performing alongside international ensembles from Jordan and Austria. This popular event, which transforms the maidan into a vibrant temporary auditorium, includes music, light displays, and dynamic collaborations, making it an exciting experience for attendees.
