The Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan, located in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, is known for its production of Al Mabasli dates. In 2023, the wilayat produced an impressive 7,798 tonnes of these high-quality dates. The harvest and dressing season of Al Mabasli dates is a significant tradition that has been passed down through generations among farmers in the village of Falaj Al-Mashaykh. This season provides a source of income for the people of the wilayat, making it a crucial time for the farmers who take care of the palm trees with great dedication.
The annual Al Mabasli harvest season typically starts from the end of June and lasts until the end of July. During this time, there is an abundant production of dates. Salem bin Sultan Al Araimi, the Director of the Department of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries, and Water Resources in the Wilayat of Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan, revealed that there are approximately 115,367 palm trees in the wilayat, resulting in the impressive production of 7,798 tonnes of dates in 2023. On average, each palm tree produces about 68 kilograms of dates.
To further enhance the economic return and expand the export opportunities in the date sector, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion is collaborating with the Nakheel Development Company. They aim to purchase basoor of various types to add value and promote export to foreign markets. Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources are actively involved in developing the date sector by implementing modern farming techniques, providing care for palm trees, and conducting various programs to protect them from pests such as the palm dubas insect and the red palm weevil.
The dressing process of Al Mabasli dates involves several stages, as explained by Khamis bin Hamad Al-Mashayikhi, a resident of Falaj Al-Mashayikh. The process begins when the fruits of the Al Mabsley palm tree turn fully yellowed, known as “bisr.” Then, the harvesting process, called “Al-Jaddad,” is carried out before transferring the dates to a pot for the cooking process. Afterward, they are placed on the stove to dry for about 5 to 7 days, depending on the outside temperature, before being assembled. This meticulous process ensures the high quality and delicious taste of the Al Mabasli dates.
