The Muscat Governorate in Oman has recently expanded its green spaces to cover an impressive 2.73 million square meters, demonstrating a commitment to environmental sustainability. This initiative, known as the ‘Green Muscat’ initiative, aims to engage the community in preserving vegetation, preventing desertification, and expanding green spaces. The Sultanate recently celebrated Omani Agriculture Day on October 31, with Muscat Governorate’s municipal sector launching several environmental initiatives to promote sustainability.

As part of the Green Muscat initiative, plans are underway to plant 10 million trees, with the first phase involving the distribution of 4,000 seedlings in various areas. These efforts are designed to raise environmental awareness, particularly among young people, and encourage active participation in caring for the city’s green spaces. By engaging the community in these planting campaigns, Muscat Governorate is setting an example for sustainable urban development in Oman.

Muscat Municipality has also rolled out multiple projects to create eco-friendly parks and walkways across the governorate. Fins Beach Park in Quriyat, Al Nahda City Park in Al Amerat, and Al Maabilah South Park in Seeb are just a few examples of these new projects, each designed to enhance the community’s quality of life and promote sustainability. These parks feature a range of amenities such as green areas, children’s playgrounds, and sports facilities, catering to the needs of residents.

In addition to creating new parks and walkways, Muscat Municipality is also focused on developing walkways that promote active lifestyles and support the community’s health and wellness goals. The Ministries District Walk in Al Khuwair and the Golden Jubilee Walkway in Seeb are key projects that provide ample space for physical activities, enhancing quality of life in the region. These walkways are equipped with AI-driven smart irrigation systems to conserve water and maintain a healthy green environment.

One of the cornerstones of Muscat’s green space expansion has been its commitment to fostering community partnerships. The municipality collaborates with the private sector to create multi-use spaces that combine public parks with commercial amenities. In Al Maabila South, a partnership with Saud bin Hilal Al Sabri has resulted in an integrated project that includes public parks, commercial spaces, and recreational areas. Another collaboration with Occidental of Oman has brought the “Green Walkway” or “Longitudinal Park” to life, providing a green space with sports facilities and cycling paths.

In conclusion, Muscat Governorate’s green space expansion is a testament to its dedication to environmental sustainability and the promotion of healthy lifestyles for its residents. Through initiatives such as the Green Muscat initiative and the development of eco-friendly parks and walkways, Muscat is creating a greener, healthier, and more sustainable city for future generations. By engaging the community in planting campaigns and fostering partnerships with the private sector, Muscat is setting an example for other regions in Oman and beyond to follow.
