Sandy Duthie, a Scottish man from Aberdeenshire, has landed his dream job as a lighthouse keeper on Gabo Island, off the coast of Victoria, Australia. He first visited Australia with his partner five years ago and fell in love with the small lighthouse island. Sandy studied ecology at the University of Aberdeen before becoming an arborist, and eventually decided to make Gabo Island his home after visiting it two years ago.

The previous lighthouse keeper, Leo op den Brouw, retired after 25 years, leaving the post open for Sandy to fill. The job entails spending six months of the year on the island, with a month-on, month-off rotation. Sandy shares the responsibilities with another keeper and gets to and from the island via a small boat charter, dealing with often choppy conditions and sightings of whales along the way.

Gabo Island, with its rich wildlife including penguins, whales, sea eagles, and seals, has captured Sandy’s heart. He describes it as feeling like home, reminiscent of the north east of Scotland with its unique granite and foliage. The job requires a hands-on approach, with tasks ranging from weather observations to cleaning public toilets and ongoing maintenance of the lighthouse and surrounding structures. Sandy emphasizes the need to be adaptable and prepared for the unexpected on the island.

Sandy’s journey to becoming a lighthouse keeper on Gabo Island reflects his passion for nature and desire to immerse himself in a remote and rugged environment. His love for the island’s wildlife, stunning scenery, and unique challenges like weather observations and maintenance work make the job more of a way of living than just a typical 9-5 role. Sandy’s transition from Scotland to Australia, and from arborist to lighthouse keeper, showcases his adventurous spirit and willingness to embrace new opportunities.

The remote location of Gabo Island, its historical lighthouse, and the diverse wildlife that inhabits the area make it a dream job for Sandy and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for any nature enthusiast. Sandy’s dedication to maintaining the island’s heritage and caring for its wildlife reflects his passion for conservation and his commitment to being a steward of the land. As he continues to navigate the challenges and rewards of life as a lighthouse keeper, Sandy’s story serves as an inspiration for those who dream of finding their own piece of paradise in the world.

In conclusion, Sandy Duthie’s journey from Scotland to Gabo Island as a lighthouse keeper is a testament to following one’s dreams and embracing new opportunities. His passion for nature, wildlife, and remote living has led him to a fulfilling career that combines his love for the outdoors with a sense of purpose and responsibility. As Sandy continues to care for Gabo Island and its inhabitants, his story serves as a reminder of the beauty and importance of preserving our natural environments for future generations to enjoy.
