Loneliness is a significant concern globally, with one in four people worldwide experiencing it. This distressing feeling arises when individuals have fewer social connections than they desire, leading to adverse effects on health and well-being. In Dubai, Tarek, a former chef in his sixties, shares his struggles with loneliness following the loss of his wife, highlighting the challenges faced by many in the region. Dr Daniel Knoepflmacher, a host at Weill Cornell Medicine, explains the various factors contributing to loneliness, including social isolation, lack of meaningful relationships, and overuse of technology.

Dr Thoraiyah Kanafani, a clinical psychologist in Dubai, emphasizes the importance of addressing loneliness as it can lead to increased stress levels and various health issues such as depression, addiction, and heart disease. The UAE, being a transient place with many expats, is witnessing a rise in loneliness, especially among individuals working from home. Dr Thoraiyah suggests engaging more in real-world activities, joining clubs, and talking to strangers to combat loneliness effectively.

Loneliness can manifest in various aspects of life, affecting emotions, behaviors, and physical well-being. Bushra Khan, a holistic psychotherapist, highlights the importance of recognizing signs of loneliness in oneself, such as feelings of disconnection or persistent sadness. It is crucial to address these emotions with compassion and effort to improve overall well-being. Clinical neuropsychologist Dr Alexandre Machado emphasizes the difference between being alone and feeling lonely, noting that virtual interactions can contribute to feelings of isolation.

Dr Machado stresses the importance of fostering meaningful connections with friends, family, and the community to combat loneliness effectively. Engaging in social activities, practicing self-compassion, and exploring new hobbies are recommended to alleviate feelings of isolation. Dr Pik Ki Ho, an assistant professor of psychology, discusses the negative impacts of loneliness on physical and mental health outcomes, as well as the importance of addressing transitional life changes to reduce feelings of loneliness.

A recent study in the UAE found that female students tend to experience higher levels of loneliness compared to male students, with unmarried older adults also reporting increased feelings of loneliness. The transient nature of connections in vibrant urban lifestyles can contribute to loneliness among expatriates and foreign students. Dr Ho stresses the need for greater awareness of loneliness as a genuine concern in the region. Overall, addressing loneliness requires a combination of social engagement, self-care practices, and awareness of individual emotional needs to improve overall well-being and combat feelings of isolation.
