Bahrain and Japan recently commemorated the 15th anniversary of Japan’s counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden and off the coast of Somalia with a reception held aboard the Japanese ship MURASAME. Vice Admiral Katsushi OMACHI, Commander-in-Chief of Japan’s Self Defense Fleet, praised Bahrain’s Royal Navy for their efforts in maintaining regional stability, highlighting the importance of cooperation in defense and trade. The event, jointly hosted by Japan’s Ambassador to Bahrain and Vice Admiral OMACHI, was attended by various dignitaries, including H.E. Ambassador Shaikh Abdulla bin Ali Al Khalifa and Vice Admiral George Wikoff, Commander of US NAVCENT, US Fifth Fleet, and the Combined Maritime Forces.

Japan’s Ambassador H.E. Asako OKAI also emphasized the achievements of Japan’s counter-piracy operations, which have included escorting nearly 4,000 merchant ships over the past 15 years. Despite a decrease in piracy incidents, there is still a potential threat due to the diversion of military resources to address other issues, such as the Houthi threat in the Red Sea. H.E. Ambassador Shaikh Abdulla bin Ali highlighted the strengthening ties between Bahrain and Japan, with the signing of a defense cooperation and exchange memorandum during the 2023 Manama Dialogue, resulting in joint exercises and high-level visits.

The event showcased the importance of multinational cooperation within the Combined Maritime Forces, which allows for a coordinated response to piracy and maritime security threats. This partnership not only enhances diplomatic and military relations but also contributes to regional stability by ensuring safer seas for all stakeholders. The reception served as a testament to Japan’s commitment to securing global maritime routes and highlighted Bahrain’s critical role as a maritime partner in fostering commercial collaboration. The deepening ties between Bahrain and Japan are reflected in the ongoing strategic collaboration between the two nations, with joint exercises and exchanges strengthening their relationship.

Overall, the commemoration event marked a significant milestone in the partnership between Bahrain and Japan in safeguarding maritime commerce and countering piracy. The mutual cooperation and coordination within the Combined Maritime Forces have been instrumental in ensuring the safety of vessels passing through critical shipping lanes. As piracy threats continue to evolve, it is crucial for nations to work together to address these challenges effectively and maintain regional stability. Through continued collaboration and joint efforts, Bahrain and Japan are poised to further enhance their strategic partnership in safeguarding maritime routes and promoting international trade.
