World Drowning Prevention Day was recently observed on July 25, with organizations and communities globally coming together to raise awareness about the dangers of drowning and promote water safety measures. In Qatar, the Hamad Injury Prevention Program (HIPP) within the Hamad Trauma Center of Hamad Medical Corporation played a pivotal role in this initiative. The HIPP’s Program Coordinator, Tsoler Sekayan, emphasized the importance of water safety, especially for infants and toddlers, as drowning is a leading cause of injury and death in children aged between one and four years old.

Drowning is a significant global issue, with an estimated 236,000 people losing their lives to drowning each year. It is the third-leading cause of unintentional injury and death worldwide, with children, males, and individuals with easy access to water being most at risk. Young children are particularly vulnerable to drowning, especially in settings such as the bathtub or backyard pool at home. Parents need to be vigilant and never leave young children and babies unattended near water, as drowning can happen quickly and silently.

To improve water safety in homes, especially for families with young children, several recommendations have been made. These include constant supervision, ensuring tubs and pools are emptied and stored safely, keeping doors closed, installing pool fences, assigning a responsible adult watcher at the beach or pool, ensuring older children have companions while swimming, educating children on water safety rules, learning CPR and basic water rescue skills, and knowing when to call emergency services in the event of a drowning incident.

By following these guidelines, families can reduce the risk of drowning and ensure the safety of their loved ones around water. Constant supervision, proper storage and closure of water containers, installation of pool fences, and education on water safety are all crucial steps in preventing tragic drowning incidents. Additionally, learning CPR and knowing when to call for emergency assistance are essential skills that can save lives in critical situations. By working together to prioritize water safety, communities can make a significant impact in reducing drowning incidents and protecting individuals, especially children, from this preventable tragedy.

On World Drowning Prevention Day and beyond, it is important for communities and organizations to continue promoting water safety measures and raising awareness about the risks of drowning. By implementing practical recommendations such as constant supervision, proper storage of water containers, educating children on water safety rules, and learning CPR and basic water rescue skills, individuals and families can take proactive steps to prevent drowning incidents. Together, we can make a difference in reducing the number of lives lost to drowning each year and ensure a safer environment for everyone around water bodies. Let us all join hands in the fight against drowning and work towards a world where every individual can enjoy water activities safely.
