Dubai Municipality Strengthens Food Safety Measures for Schools
As the academic year 2026-2027 approaches, Dubai Municipality has announced intensified inspections and regulatory measures within educational institutions. This effort aims to ensure adherence to high standards of food safety and proper nutrition, creating a safe, healthy, and sustainable school environment for kindergarten and school students.
The initiative will extend its oversight to more than 500 educational institutions across the emirate, with inspection teams focusing on compliance with health and food safety regulations in school cafeterias. Through field visits and the advanced capabilities of the DM Checked platform, authorities will monitor and document compliance, verify necessary permits, and ensure that menus align with Dubai Municipality’s approved nutritional guidelines.
Enhancing the School Environment
Further inspections will validate that school buildings meet accepted safety criteria, ensuring a secure environment for both students and educational staff. Efforts will include checking ventilation and air conditioning systems to mitigate pollutants, auditing water systems for cleanliness, and verifying that swimming pools comply with safety regulations, including lifeguard presences and necessary rescue equipment.
According to Dr. Nasim Mohammed Rafei, acting Executive Director of the Environment, Health, and Safety Department at Dubai Municipality, the technical and regulatory teams are ready to welcome the new school season. Their primary goal remains ensuring the health and safety of students, which is critical to providing a food-safe school environment that contributes to the overall quality of life in Dubai’s community.
Food Security Programs in Schools
Dr. Rafei stated, “These initiatives reflect Dubai Municipality’s commitment to establishing a proactive and sustainable food and health system within educational institutions. Our focus is to foster a safe and model school environment that encourages healthy eating habits and positive behaviors among students. This involves active participation from school staff and parents to enhance the physical and mental health of our children.”
In preparation for the upcoming academic year, Dubai Municipality has approved food suppliers and menus for school cafeterias, ensuring compliance with the guidelines for safe and nutritious meals for students. This proactive measure underlines the commitment to maintaining high food safety standards.
Ongoing Safety Initiatives
Moreover, Dubai Municipality has enhanced community awareness programs, building on extensive campaigns conducted during summer in family entertainment centers and community hubs across the emirate. The goal is to instill knowledge about food safety principles and healthy nutritional practices while issuing technical guides to ensure that educational environments meet stringent health and safety standards.
Engaging the Community
The municipality has broadened its outreach efforts, targeting students, parents, and educational staff through multiple initiatives focusing on food safety and nutrition. Interactive workshops are being provided, aimed at different age groups of students to familiarize them with the Smart Food Choices system. This system categorizes food options based on a color-coding approach: green, orange, red, and black.
These workshops also include practical training on essential food safety practices and personal hygiene, covering proper handwashing techniques and safe meal preparation and storage for school lunches.
Encouraging Responsible Consumption
To further promote responsible consumption, Dubai Municipality conducted workshops and interactive activities in educational institutions to encourage behaviors aimed at reducing food waste. These initiatives emphasize the positive effects of responsible practices on environmental conservation and natural resource sustainability.
In addition, Dubai Municipality is committed to training food safety officials and cafeteria staff in schools. Specialized workshops provide detailed guidance on the technical standards and practices necessary for the safe preparation, storage, and handling of school meals, ensuring adherence to the established nutrition guidelines.
Parental Involvement for Healthier Families
In line with the UAE’s Family Year initiatives, Dubai Municipality aims to equip parents with a range of informative guidance through various digital and traditional platforms. This support will help parents prepare balanced and safe home-cooked meals, ensuring the integration of healthful practices learned in school into family routines.
As the new school year begins, all eyes will be on the implementation of these enhanced food safety and nutrition measures in Dubai’s schools. The anticipation remains high regarding the positive impact these efforts will have on the health and wellbeing of students across the emirate. Moving forward, stakeholders will look for ongoing reports and community engagement in sustaining a culture of safety and health in all educational environments.
