As a new year begins, many in the United Arab Emirates turn their attention to planning enjoyable times with family and friends, whether by exploring the country’s diverse entertainment venues or traveling abroad. With seven official public holidays established by the UAE Cabinet’s decision regarding official holidays, residents can leverage these days in 2026 for a much-needed break from their daily routines.

By strategically combining annual leave with these public holidays, it is possible to create extended vacation periods that help alleviate the pressure of daily life. Understanding the official holiday schedule in the UAE is essential for effective planning.

Overview of Official Holidays in the UAE for 2026

The official holidays in 2026 provide excellent opportunities for planning vacations or time off work. The following list outlines the anticipated holidays throughout the year.

New Year’s Day

The New Year’s holiday falls on Thursday, January 1, 2026, lasting for one day. Residents can also take leave on Friday, January 2, 2026, along with the weekend, resulting in a four-day break by using just one day of annual leave.

Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is expected to be observed from Friday, March 20, to Sunday, March 22, 2026, for a total of three days. By taking leave on Monday, March 16, and returning to work on Monday, March 23, employees can extend their time off to seven days while using only five days of their annual leave.

Arafat Day and Eid al-Adha

Arafat Day falls on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, leading into Eid al-Adha holiday from Wednesday, May 27, to Friday, May 29. Arafat Day is a one-day holiday, with Eid al-Adha offering three days off. By taking leave on Monday, May 25, residents can enjoy a nine-day break by combining these holidays with the preceding and following weekends.

Islamic New Year

The Islamic New Year, or Hijri New Year, is anticipated to be celebrated on Wednesday, June 17, 2026. This holiday lasts for one day, but by taking leave on Thursday and Friday, June 18 and 19, individuals can enjoy a five-day span off work, including the weekend.

Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday

Expected on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, this holiday commemorates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad and spans one day. Taking leave on Monday, August 24, can result in a four-day weekend by leveraging the weekends effectively.

United Arab Emirates National Day

The year concludes with the UAE National Day, celebrated on Tuesday, December 1, 2026, coinciding with Martyrs’ Day. The National Day holiday follows on Wednesday and Thursday, December 2 and 3. By taking leave on Monday, November 30, and December 1, as well as Friday, December 4, residents can enjoy an extended nine-day vacation by merging the weekends surrounding these holidays.

Utilizing Holidays for Extended Breaks

For many individuals in the UAE, utilizing annual leave in conjunction with public holidays fosters the chance for extended vacations. Holidays not only provide respite but also serve as an opportunity for family bonding and relaxation away from the fast-paced daily life.

As 2026 unfolds, individuals should consider these dates carefully while planning their getaways or family outings. Taking advantage of public holidays can significantly enhance travel experiences, allowing for much longer vacations without exhausting annual leave balances.

Looking Ahead: The Impact of Holidays on Travel Plans

With the careful planning of combined holidays, many in the UAE are likely to look forward to rich experiences during their time off. It’s important to stay informed about the exact holiday dates as they may vary based on official announcements, particularly concerning lunar events such as Eid and the Islamic New Year.

Moreover, considering the growing range of local and international travel options, 2026 offers a myriad of opportunities for residents looking to unwind. Keeping an eye on updated travel guidelines and itineraries will ensure that families maximize their vacation experiences.
