Saudi Meteorology Warns Strong Winds Limit Visibility in Ha’il

Hail wind activity prompts visibility advisory

The National Center for Meteorology in the Hail region issued a warning on surface wind activity today that is expected to affect open areas and major highways. The Hail wind activity has reduced horizontal visibility to between 3 and 5 kilometers, officials said, and the advisory is in force until 7 p.m. local time.

Authorities advised motorists and outdoor workers to take precautions while the conditions persist, according to the center’s statement. The notice covers exposed landscapes and transit routes where wind-driven dust and blowing sand may lower sight lines.

Where and when the reduced visibility will occur

The advisory specifically targets the Hail administrative area, including highways that connect urban centers to surrounding desert plains. Officials noted that surface winds will be strongest during daylight hours and are expected to subside toward the evening.

According to meteorological reports, the advisory remains active until 7 p.m., but the National Center for Meteorology said residents should monitor updates as conditions can change rapidly. Therefore, travelers are encouraged to plan for delays and allow extra travel time.

Expected impacts on travel and open areas

Surface winds associated with the advisory may create local dust storms and moving sand that reduce visibility on roads, highways and in open agricultural and construction sites. Reduced visibility increases the risk of traffic incidents, particularly on high-speed routes and intercity roads.

Furthermore, officials warned that sudden drops in horizontal visibility to 3–5 kilometers can catch drivers unprepared. As a result, traffic safety authorities may enforce slower speed limits or close affected stretches of road temporarily to prevent accidents.

Meteorological details and forecast

The National Center for Meteorology attributed the conditions to an intensification of near-surface winds that lift fine particles from dry ground in exposed areas. The center’s bulletin indicates that gusts are responsible for transporting dust across open terrain and along main roads.

Meanwhile, forecasters said the weather pattern producing the event is expected to weaken after the evening, with calmer conditions likely after 7 p.m. local time. However, the center cautioned that localized pockets of reduced visibility may persist into the night in areas where loose surface material remains unsettled.

Precautions and guidance for residents and drivers

Authorities recommended simple safety measures to reduce risk during the advisory. Drivers should reduce speed, use headlights, increase following distances and, if visibility becomes very poor, pull off the road safely and activate hazard lights until conditions improve.

For motorists

When encountering reduced visibility, motorists should avoid stopping in traffic lanes and seek a safe place to wait out the worst conditions. Additionally, keeping windows and vents closed limits dust entry into vehicles and helps maintain clear breathing conditions for passengers.

Public services and response measures

Emergency services and road maintenance crews will monitor the situation and are prepared to respond to incidents or to treat road surfaces as needed. Traffic authorities said they will issue route-specific advisories where travel conditions deteriorate significantly.

Meanwhile, public health officials reminded vulnerable groups—such as people with respiratory conditions, children and the elderly—to limit outdoor exposure while winds carry dust and sand. Therefore, staying informed through official channels remains important.

How to stay informed and where to get updates

Residents and travelers are advised to follow official channels for the latest bulletins from the National Center for Meteorology and local traffic authorities. Real-time information is available via official websites and social media feeds, and local radio and television outlets may broadcast urgent warnings.

For official meteorological updates, consult the National Center for Meteorology website and regional traffic authority announcements. Additionally, navigation apps may provide live traffic and visibility alerts for major routes.

Outlook and next steps

The National Center for Meteorology indicated that conditions are expected to abate after the advisory period, but it urged continued vigilance until winds ease. Forecast updates later in the day will confirm whether the Hail wind activity has dissipated or if additional measures are necessary.

Readers should watch for revised bulletins and traffic advisories and prepare for short-term travel disruptions. Monitoring official channels throughout the evening will provide the best guidance on when normal conditions return.
