Celebrating Seniors: A Successful Community Event in Izki
More than 300 senior citizens participated in community events organized by the Semah and Maqzah Health Center in Izki, coinciding with International Day of Older Persons. The event also saw extensive involvement from residents of the surrounding villages, including Semah Al-Alaiah, Maqzah, and Semah Al-Safalah.
The objective of these events was to bring joy to the lives of senior citizens, honoring their contributions to society and emphasizing the importance of addressing their health and social needs. The activities aimed to strengthen community bonds and revive cherished memories in a warm atmosphere, with the presence of Sheikh Zaher bin Sarhan Al-Amri and Younes bin Ali Al-Mandhari, members of the Council of Oman.
Activities Reflecting Omani Heritage
The events featured a variety of activities, including exhibits that showcased elements of traditional Omani life. These allowed seniors to connect with the rich aspects of their past, including customs and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Visitors had the opportunity to reminisce about their youth while educating younger generations about their heritage.
The program comprised performances of folk arts, sections dedicated to teaching the Quran and traditional medicine, as well as exhibitions of historical weapons, weaving, pottery, vintage collectibles, and traditional games. These activities highlighted the lifestyle of the Omani community in earlier times.
Honoring the Role of Women in Omani Society
A special section of the event focused on traditional Omani cuisine, featuring dishes that resonate with the memory and customs of the local populace. Additionally, a segment highlighting women’s roles in historical contexts was dedicated to showcasing the contributions women made within families and communities, reaffirming their importance in society.
Activities within this segment included demonstrations of practices such as yogurt preparation and firewood gathering, underscoring the significance of passing down skills, experiences, and cultural practices from one generation to the next. According to Said bin Khalfan Al-Hadrami, one of the organizers, the initiative was a community effort aimed at honoring the past contributions of elders while fostering a glimpse into the lives of their ancestors.
A Positive Outlook for Future Events
This successful gathering serves as a reminder of the vital role older individuals play in the community and highlights the importance of keeping their traditions alive. The commitment to celebrate and acknowledge the elder generation demonstrates a societal recognition of their past efforts and a proactive approach to ensuring their well-being.
Looking ahead, community organizers and health centers are expected to continue promoting similar initiatives that foster intergenerational dialogue and understanding, enhancing the quality of life for senior citizens and enriching community cohesion. Residents and local authorities alike will be closely watching for further developments in this important cultural initiative.
