France’s men’s football team has advanced to the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after a 3-0 victory over New Zealand in the final group game. This win sets up a highly anticipated showdown with Argentina in the next round. Argentina had secured their spot in the knockout phase earlier in the day, and France joined them as group winners with a perfect record of three wins and no goals conceded in Group A. Goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta, Desire Doue, and Arnaud Kalimuendo secured France’s victory over New Zealand in Marseille.

The United States also progressed to the quarter-finals as runners-up in Group A after a 3-0 win against Guinea, with Kevin Paredes scoring twice. France and Argentina will face off in Bordeaux on Friday, and this clash is particularly significant following recent controversy between the two nations. Argentina players were recorded making racist chants about French players, including star striker Kylian Mbappe, during their Copa America victory celebrations earlier in the month. FIFA has launched an investigation into these chants, which consisted of racist and homophobic insults.

Argentina’s victory over Ukraine in Lyon secured their place in the quarter-finals and set up the intriguing match against France. Thiago Almada’s stunning goal and Claudio Echeverri’s late strike sealed the win for the South Americans. The last meeting between France and Argentina was in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, which Argentina won on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw. However, the Olympic football tournament is an under-23 competition, with up to three overage players allowed in each squad.

Argentina’s Olympic squad is different from the World Cup-winning team, with only two players from the 2022 final present in the current squad. France’s squad also has a different composition, ensuring that the upcoming quarter-final match will feature a fresh lineup of players. Argentina’s second-place finish in Group B means they will face Group A winners France in the quarter-finals. The match promises to be an exciting and potentially tense encounter between two strong teams with a history of competitive matches.

The upcoming clash between France and Argentina is eagerly anticipated, as both teams aim to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The rivalry between the two nations, fueled by recent controversies and past encounters, adds an extra layer of excitement to the match. Fans can expect an intense and closely contested game between two talented teams vying for a place in the next round of the tournament. France’s impressive performance in the group stage, combined with Argentina’s determination to defend their Olympic title, sets the stage for a thrilling quarter-final match between two footballing heavyweights.
