The Global Center to Combat Extremism Ideology (Etidal) and the Telegram platform have joined hands to combat extremist content online. In the second quarter of 2024, they successfully removed 18.6 million pieces of extremist content and closed 660 channels linked with terrorist organizations. Etidal aims to challenge the narrative of exclusion and disrupt the digital activities of extremist groups using cutting-edge technologies. The joint teams are actively monitoring and countering the propaganda efforts of three major terrorist organizations – ISIS, Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham, and Al-Qaeda.

In a statement, the center revealed that they eliminated 14.8 million pieces of extremist content and shut down 305 channels associated with ISIS during the specified period. Additionally, they removed 3.5 million pieces of extremist content and closed 281 channels related to Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham. Furthermore, 231,354 pieces of extremist content were removed, and 74 channels used by Al-Qaeda to spread extremist messages were shut down. A surge in extremist propaganda activity was noted at the start of the Hajj season, particularly during Dhu al-Hijjah, when more than 2 million pieces of extremist content were taken down.

The second quarter of 2024 witnessed a rise in propaganda activity by the three terrorist organizations, with a 12.82% increase compared to the first quarter. This spike in activity is a recurring trend during the Hajj season and highlights the importance of vigilance in combatting extremist content. Since February 2022, Etidal and the Telegram platform have collaborated in removing 93.9 million pieces of extremist content and closing 14,193 extremist channels. The removed content encompassed various media formats such as PDFs, video clips, and audio recordings, underscoring the diverse nature of extremist propaganda.

The concerted efforts of Etidal and Telegram have proven instrumental in curbing the spread of extremist ideology online. By leveraging advanced technologies and continuous monitoring, the organizations have effectively countered the propaganda efforts of terrorist groups. The removal of millions of pieces of extremist content and the closure of hundreds of channels signify a significant stride in combating online radicalization. As extremist activities tend to escalate during specific periods such as the Hajj season, proactive measures are crucial in dismantling their digital presence.

The eradication of extremist content not only disrupts the dissemination of harmful ideologies but also serves as a deterrent to potential recruits. By cutting off the channels used by terrorist organizations to propagate their messages, Etidal and Telegram are playing a pivotal role in safeguarding online spaces from radicalization. The collaborative approach between the two entities highlights the importance of cross-sector partnerships in tackling global security challenges. Moving forward, continued vigilance and proactive measures will be essential in mitigating the spread of extremist content and promoting a safer online environment.

In conclusion, the successful removal of millions of pieces of extremist content by Etidal and Telegram underscores the effectiveness of collaborative efforts in combating online radicalization. By targeting key propaganda channels utilized by terrorist organizations, the organizations are actively engaged in countering extremist narratives and safeguarding online users. As extremist activities continue to evolve, ongoing vigilance and technological advancements will be crucial in staying ahead of the curve. Through continued collaboration and innovation, Etidal and Telegram are paving the way for a safer and more secure online landscape.
