In a heartwarming story of dedication and love for the game, Eisa Al Khoori, a 50-year-old Emirati, has participated in all 30 editions of the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival. As the prestigious tournament kicks off in the capital, Eisa has announced that this will be his final appearance, marking his retirement from competitive chess. Chess has always been a significant part of Eisa’s life, starting in his childhood when he followed his siblings to the Abu Dhabi Chess Club and got hooked on the game.

Under the guidance of coach Zuhair Ahmad, Eisa honed his skills and transformed chess from a pastime into a passion. Representing his club in numerous national and international tournaments, the Abu Dhabi Chess Festival holds a special place in Eisa’s heart. Despite having participated in every edition of the tournament since the early 90s, he has decided that this year will be his last. Eisa reminisces about the emotional moments and friendships he has made over the years, and although he will no longer compete in physical tournaments, he plans to continue playing chess online.

Reflecting on the evolution of the Abu Dhabi Chess Festival, Eisa notes the increasing level of competition with each edition. What once started as a local community event has now attracted world-class players and grandmasters from 82 countries. Eisa acknowledges the learning experience of playing against such talented competitors and expresses his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the tournament over the years. Despite retiring from competitive play, Eisa still harbors one dream – to nurture his two seven-year-old children into chess grandmasters, carrying on the legacy of his love for the game.

As Eisa makes his final move in the Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival, his journey of dedication and passion comes to a bittersweet end. Having participated in every edition of the tournament for the past three decades, Eisa leaves behind a legacy of commitment and love for chess. As he looks forward to retirement and focusing on online play, Eisa’s story serves as an inspiration to chess enthusiasts around the world. May his children carry on his dream of becoming grandmasters and continue the legacy of their father’s love for the game.
