The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has recently completed the upgrade of 900 lighting units along 9km of Sheikh Rashid Street to energy-efficient LED lighting. This project aims to enhance the sustainability of road lighting in the emirate and serve motorists using the road in both directions across 10 lanes. The upgrade is a part of RTA’s efforts to maintain the infrastructure of the streetlighting network in line with Dubai’s strategic objectives to conserve energy and promote the green economy.

The upgrade project was completed in three phases over a period of six months. The first phase focused on the sector from Deira to Al Garhoud Bridge, followed by the stretch between Deira and Bur Dubai in the second phase, and concluding with the sector from Bur Dubai to the intersection of Sheikh Khalifa Street with Sheikh Rashid Street in the third phase. This upgrade is in line with the UAE’s Sustainability Initiative 2024 and contributes to the country’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Abdullah Lootah, Director of Road and Facilities Maintenance at RTA, highlighted the benefits of LED lighting over traditional options. LED technology is more environmentally friendly, consuming 60% less energy and having a longer lifespan of up to 60,000 hours compared to 22,000 hours for conventional lights. These improvements not only reduce maintenance and operational costs but also enhance the overall efficiency of Dubai’s street lighting system. LED lights also offer better brightness and colour clarity, doubling the quality of lighting and improving nighttime visibility and traffic safety on Dubai’s roads.

RTA’s commitment to developing the road network and facilities includes incorporating smart and innovative technical solutions tailored to the UAE’s climate to support sustainability goals. The new LED units not only offer better quality lighting but are also free from materials harmful to the environment, aligning with RTA and Dubai’s commitment to achieving environmental sustainability. Overall, the upgrade of lighting units along Sheikh Rashid Street is a significant step towards enhancing the sustainability of road lighting in Dubai and promoting energy efficiency in the emirate.
