The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has announced the open call for the Al Marmoom Short-Film Competition, happening as part of the fourth Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert festival. The main objective of this competition is to enhance the local film scene, provide a platform to support emerging filmmakers, and inspire new talent to join the industry. The competition is open to filmmakers and creatives locally, regionally, and globally, inviting them to participate and submit their works for the festival’s competition.

Applications for the competition will be accepted from August 14 to September 30, and a committee of experts, directors, and filmmakers will evaluate the submissions to select the films competing for the festival awards. The festival will take place at the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve from January 3 to 12, 2025. The competition features four categories: documentaries, animated films, live-action, and films made using artificial intelligence. Eligible works will be chosen based on criteria related to quality and content.

Participants are required to present unique and innovative ideas that express their artistic visions, ensure that their work is original, recent, and has not been showcased in any other festival or event before. Films should be between 3 and 30 minutes long, free from any offensive content, and the participant must own all rights to the short film. The festival aims to strengthen the film industry in the region, provide a platform for industry professionals to share experiences and knowledge, and offer a cultural experience for the public.

The Al Marmoom: Film in the Desert festival seeks to create an environment that brings together industry professionals to inspire new talents to join the film industry. The festival’s third edition showcased over 70 films from Emirati, Gulf, Arab, and international filmmakers. The previous edition of the Al Marmoom Short-Film Competition featured 56 short films competing in three categories and included talks, workshops, exhibitions, and artworks inspired by the history of cinema. The festival aims to support the emerging film sector locally and regionally, allowing creatives to showcase their talents, refine their skills, and achieve professionalism.

In conclusion, the Al Marmoom Short-Film Competition is an opportunity for emerging filmmakers and creatives to showcase their works, gain recognition, and contribute to the growth of the film industry in the region. The festival provides a platform for industry professionals to share their knowledge and expertise, inspiring new talents to pursue a career in filmmaking. By participating in the competition, filmmakers have a chance to showcase their creativity, refine their skills, and gain valuable experience in the industry. The festival plays a crucial role in promoting cultural exchange and providing a platform for emerging talents to thrive in the film industry.
