Doha Municipality in Qatar recently conducted a comprehensive inspection and awareness campaign at more than 155 hotels as part of efforts to boost tourism during the summer season and attract families and individuals as the academic year draws to a close. The 15-day campaign saw the participation of over 30 veterinarians and food inspectors, along with officials from the municipal control department who organized health awareness sessions for over 620 hotel workers. These sessions focused on educating food handlers about their important role in the food chain, clarifying the causes of foodborne illnesses, and promoting the effective implementation of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) measures.

As part of the campaign, 55 samples of food items were collected for further analysis at the Central Laboratories Unit to ensure their safety and compliance with standard specifications. The initiative was part of the Ministry of Municipality’s efforts to regulate food safety in accordance with Law No.8 of 1990, which grants sweeping powers to surveillance authorities in municipalities to enforce health policies and ensure the safety of foods consumed by humans. The campaign aimed to increase awareness and surveillance of food handling practices to prevent the circulation of unsafe or non-compliant food items.

Through the campaign, Doha Municipality sought to uphold high standards of food safety and hygiene in hotels to protect public health and enhance the overall dining experience for visitors. By educating food handlers about best practices and emphasizing the importance of adherence to hygiene protocols, the authorities aimed to instill a culture of safety and responsibility in the food industry. The participation of veterinarians and food inspectors in the campaign underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of food served in hospitality establishments.

In addition to conducting inspections and awareness sessions, the campaign also highlighted the importance of the Central Laboratories Unit in confirming the safety and quality of food items through rigorous testing and analysis. By subjecting food samples to thorough examination, authorities could identify any potential risks or violations of food safety standards, thus safeguarding public health and upholding the reputation of Qatar’s hospitality sector. The collaborative efforts of various stakeholders in the campaign demonstrated a collective commitment to maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene in the country.

Overall, the inspection and awareness campaign organized by Doha Municipality in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality and other regulatory bodies served as a proactive measure to ensure the safety and quality of food served in hotels during the busy summer season. By engaging with hotel workers, conducting inspections, and testing food samples, the authorities demonstrated their dedication to upholding food safety standards and protecting public health. Moving forward, continued efforts in monitoring and regulating food outlets in Qatar will be essential to maintain the reputation of the hospitality sector and provide a safe dining environment for residents and visitors alike.
